So, I'm off to India for a month tomorrow - Starting in Cochin, Kerala and working my way north to Amritsar then over to Veranasi.

Just wondering if anybody else has been there and has any recommendation, trips/ things to see that I shouldn't miss out on - or even any decent hostels to stay in??

    Thanks,
    Regards

 Yeah I might have a bit of information to share.

India doesn't really do hostels as such. Yea sure you the YMCA's and all but I think it would definitely still be fairly cheap for you to shack up in a decent 2 star hotel or boarding house that are a feckin dime a dozen.

Which all cities you visiting ?

If you can, make sure to visit Ooty in Tamil Nadu, about 74 kilometres from Coimbatore. It's a small, quaint, beautiful town in the hills and you can do well, trekking and stuff.

It's 90 km from Coimbatore and you want to send him to Ooty in what would be the most crowded and expensive time of the year ? Not sure when you last went to Ooty mate but its no longer small and quaint.

    Edited it.

When was the last time you went there? It's been a long time for me. I grew up there, from 3-10 (96-03).

Make sure you take plenty of toilet roll with you. And Id avoid shakeing hands with the locals.

thanks for the tip - is it fairly easy to get to on the train/ bus - i won't have any transport - I've had a lot of differing opinions on the transport over there and I'm really unsure about it ;) as long as you get a ticket are the trains fairly reliable?

I can't quite make out the cities from that map but I think I can get the general idea. You travelling by train along the coast ? The Malabar coast is beautiful and during the monsoon its the best time and the worst time. Get ready for breathtaking views and long delays as the there are plenty of landslides around the mountains during the rains.

Am I right in thinking that you haven't completely planned it all and booked all the tickets ? It's not the worst way to go about it as it gives you a lot of freedom with your options and time. The only issue would be availability of tickets so ensure you book the longer train/bus journeys a couple of days in advance.

The trains are great fun in India actually and the best way to see the country. They aren't the most the accurate time wise but they get the job done, are very cheap and have a great network.

Buses aren't a bad option as well if you are traveling between two big cities. There are plenty of options are they are fast and comfortable. Booking bus tickets are easier as well and you can generally turn up at the bus depot and figure your scene there itself.

Off again? Fair play. On your own again? I wish I'd had done shit like this before my daughter came along.

Yeah, I feel like that. My two nephews have gone travelling for 3 months. Taking in Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Australia. I would love it. I have been to Goa and Thailand without my kids (they are 21 and 19 now) but its not quite the same as being care free.

Kerala is supposed to be awesome. Lucky you :)
