So as someone who is hoping to sort another new/newer car in the next 12 months, and with the price of petrol spiralling, what cars would be worthy of consideration if I was wanting something with high fuel economy?

It would need to be bigger than a feckin Smart car though!!! (Family of 4)

    Give up driving?

Seriously a tiny engine seems to be the way forward. Petrol prices and road tax prices are just simply a joke. It's not going to get cheaper either.

I wouldn't even know what to buy. I've started cycling to work to save money on petrol (working out about £30 a month)

Yes, have considered taking to pedal power mesel over the summer months. Not that I'd save a whole lot in the 3 mile round trip to work each day. Now if I started charging for kids taxi hire I reckon a tidy profit could be had.

Despite the higher cost/litre it still makes sense to buy diesel power, especially since performance is almost as good as petrol these days.

True and the engine noises are not half what they once were.

Diesel is slightly more per litre though? Guess the long term would benefit though?

It's about 10p more per litre atm.

I was thinking of getting a Diesel myself.

The price of fuel atm is scandelous.

So who is our resident Clarkson at FF who could recommend a few motors that would fit the bill?

They could be more at this rate!

Seems to go up 2pence per week atm.

Kampso: The new Toyota Prius is around 17k and is Hybrid so would save alot on fuel etc , it does 65mpg.

I can't believe it's this dear now. I remember not so long ago I thought 87.9p per litre was dear.:eeek

And in response to this thread, why not get an LPG conversion?

Diesel's about 8% more expensive, but returns at least 20% more mpg, so is still more economical at the moment.

Because it costs at least £1500 and increases servicing costs too.

If you could pick up an already converted 2nd hand vehicle though it would be well worth it. :thumb

    It was 51.9 when I passed in 1995 :(

So it's more than doubled in 13 years.

I will be getting rid of my car when my insurance runs out. It's a luxury and I can't justify the expense anymore.

When I bought my first motorbike, back in the 19th century, petrol was 35p a gallon.

Makes more sense to buy a cheaper model and pay the £1500 to have it converted to LPG. Somebody using their car everyday can recoup the money in 18months. Tax is cheaper and you loose nothing in size. It has to be the way forward.
