Starts on the 20th of July with co hosts New Zealand playing Norway and then Australia hosting Ireland. England are in Group D with Haiti, Denmark and the People's Republic of China. The USA are strong favourites to win it again with England, Germany and Spain the other fancies. Been trying to get a ticket for one or two of the games being held in Melbourne but the FIFA website make it as difficult as possible. https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tournaments/womens/womensworldcup/australia-new-zealand2023
Just been confirmed that BBC & ITV will show all 64 matches albeit I imagine they'll be on at daft o'clock .
I bought tickets for the Germany v Nigeria game but have since booked to go back to the UK for a month from 18th July so will miss the whole thing. (Insert sad face)..
Very similar to Japan/Korea in 2002. Going to 6 games. I don't usually do long vacations but now's the time. Visiting, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane & Ayers Rock (really looking forward to that).
22 July, 10:30: England v Haiti - ITV 28 July, 09:30: England v Denmark - BBC 1 August, 12:00: China v England - ITV Opening game not so bad as it's a weekend and decent time of morning. Other two group games are weekdays so not sure they'll bring in huge audiences.
Germany lost the last test before the World Cup with 2-3 against Zambia. And what a wild one that was! 0-0 at half time, then suddenly 0-2 behind through individual errors (seems the ladies watched the last men's matches ), equalised the match in stoppage time (90+1 and 90+10!!!!) and got the loss nonetheless in the 90+12 minute I don't blame the ladies, was really hot in Fürth yesterday with nearly 30 degrees and then Zambia had a player named Barbra Banda (who scored 2 consecutive hattricks at the last Olympics for Zambia). She scored 2 of the 3 goals. And this is an interesting woman: After the Olympics she didn't play for Zambia in the Africa Cup because of "too much Testosterone" in the blood! But for the World Cup she is allowed to play for Zambia. Die Spielerin, die zu viel Testosteron für den Afrika-Cup hatte (watching the photo I can understand the "too much testosterone" )
That's so awesome, lucky you! I'm going on holidays to Kuala Lumpur from the beginning of August, so I'll at least be able to watch several games. I only switched it on when I noticed the live score of the Germans 2-0 down to Zambia, at home! I couldn't believe it, and unitl now would never have imagined Zambia were good enough to beat our mighty women. Barbra really does look a bit like Drogba, but credit to her for delivering when they needed it. To be fair, Werner probably has even more testosterone than her, but he'd miss that same chance that she finished with a classy lob over the keeper.
Looking forward to it. Not as confident in the US as I was last time out. Lots of incredibly talented players in Europe have emerged and I'm not completely convinced of our defense. We have some talented young attackers to back up Morgan, though. I'm also looking forward to the Philippines making their World Cup debut - first for Philippine football as a whole. They're probably just happy to be there, but it will be very cool seeing my motherland represented. Alen Stajcic is a genius who got them there. I'm hoping that they can get at least a point and score a few goals.
Germans call their country Vaterland/Fatherland (But we also say "England is the motherland of football" for example) So you have several "irons in the fire" at this tournament, you lucky guy I'm looking forward to it, too. Although the kick-off times here in Germany are not so convenient for watching but at least at the weekend it's not a problem to watch. US team is like always a top favourite. German team has unfortunately some key players missing, especially my favourite Giulia Gwinn for the defense, she couldn't get fit in time after her serious injury (cruciate ligament rupture) from a several months ago. But other countries, like England, have also key players missing. We should top our group and reach at least the quarters, semi-final would be nice, everything else is a bonus.
Yeah, we're missing Mewis, Sauerbrunn, Swanson, and Press who are key players in the first XI, so hopefully that won't cost us too much and that some of the youngsters can step up, but missing the leadership of Sauerbrunn and Mewis specifically is gonna hurt. We have stupid hours for broadcasts here as well. 9PM shouldn't be too much of a pain, but there are some 3AM kick-offs as well which is less than ideal.
Don't rule the Aussies out, they play their final warm up game against France tonight in Melbourne and the game is a 50,000 sell out. If they get the public behind them it could be very interesting. And they've got Sam Kerr, anything could happen..
