Hemmingway

    God, this guy is hard to read. It's so bloody dry. And yet, there is something compelling about his style.

    I loved 'The Sun Also Rises' but found the short story 'The Old Man and the Sea' to be a hard slog.

    'For Whom the Bell Tolls' is somewhere in between those two. There are great moments that suck you in but then chapters where, again, it all gets rather dry and terse and relentless. And his dialogue, Christ, it's so forced and robotic. I really do dislike the iceberg method. But I can't quite bring myself to dislike him.

    Only ever read A Moveable Feast of his, about his time in Paris, was OK.
