Lads, I have a problem. The little bit of metal inside the ignition barrel has snapped. (The bit which turns inside the barrel as you turn the key, to turn the ignition switch.) I am assuming that I need a new barrel but that would cost a fair whack because I would then need new keys, and then everything resetting because of the central locking / starting. And then I would end up with a key for the door, and one for ignition right? I can't just get a standard barrel because the chip under the barrel only activates with the key I have now which is another issue. Is there any way of replacing that strip of metal inside the barrel at all or do I just need a new barrel? I have a Vauxhall if that makes any difference.
Yeah that was the plan. They quoted my mate £150 just for a new key though so I think it's gonna be pricey. That's why I asked on here, there's not much information about it on the net really. I can still use it with a screw driver so it's ok for now
For what? I can't put a whole new barrel in because the immobiliser won't register with the new key. Is it possible for a barrel to be rebuilt?
A new barrel from a salvage yard would come with the key, otherwise it would be useless. Whether you can find one is another matter. Failing that there's always E Bay . . . less than £30.
Yeah but the immobiliser underneath the barrel will only work with the current key right? Or is it possible to re-set that? Cheers for finding that on Ebay though Stret.
The main body of the key, with the battery in it, is where the transponder is, and you'd fit that to the blade of the new key? Theoretically anyway, I've never replaced a barrel as I've never had a broken one.
