Typically classy start to the season by Barca. And Villa has been playing with the likes of Xavi and Iniesta in the Spain set-up for years- there were 6 other Barca players in the Spain starting 11 with him at the World Cup, no wonder he's already partly gelled into the side. Iniesta's finish in particular was sublime, although all three goals were top quality.

Watched Real and they were pedestrian for large periods in that game. Mourinho really does face the biggest challenge of his career if he is to dethrone Barca in La Liga and win the Champions League this season. He has to win both as Capello only won one in 2006/07, the fans moaned about his style of football and he was sacked come seasons end.

It is far too early to jump to any conclusions but Barca demonstrated their capabilities in a very professional performance to ease to victory against Racing away, Villa looks like he fits in really well and it was a superb header by him for Barca's 3rd, he will suit their style like a glove to a hand.

Mallorca will be delighted with the point though against Real Madrid, good start for Michael Laudrup as coach as because of the financial posistion of Mallorca and the losses in the summer i see a potentially more difficult year ahead for them.

Wonder what MARCA's reaction will be tomorrow, bet they are already moaning and groaning after one game!

Good wins for Sevilla and Valencia on the opening day and many congrats to Real Sociedad on their return to the Primera Division with a good opening day over Villarreal.

I suspect they'll blame Gonzalo Higuain somehow...

It was just that .. to hit that first time and make it look so easy was superb. All 3 goals were very good goals though.

The penalty save by Valdes was brilliant too.

I think every team on the planet would have Higuain in a second!.

I rate him anyway. I just don't understand Madrids line up at all.

Ronaldo was roaming all over the place, I think he's better when he's on the win and he drifts inside. In the middle, he's easily stopped.

Di Maria supporting the striker?!?!? no, he needs to be on the left, then stick two in the middle, Benzema and Higuain, then you'll get goals.

But hey, who am I to question any manager?

Benzema has been devoid of self belief. His shot right at the end demonstrated that. I am not too surprised he didn't start. Canales was excellent on the left I thought.

Another interesting observation is that Lassana Diarra started over Khedira. Usually one would have thought that as Jose bought in Khedira he would play him over Lass, but not so. Lass must have really impressed him. Also anyone think Higuain has lost a yard of pace ? Looked sluggish

Mou was already criticized by lining him up rather than Ozil

Or Khedira disappoint him... In fact Mou has been criticized as well for benching Khedira and Pedro León (!) as well. Probably he will start to know how Pellegrini felt last season

Agreed, he looked a bit lost yesterday

Just a few hours after scoring a goal for Atletico tonight in their 4-0 victory, Jurado has apparently been given permisson to talk to Schalke 04 over a transfer to the Bundesliga.

Biggest news of today though has to be David Trezeguet signing for newly promoted Hercules CF on a 2 year deal, he might not have the pace he once did but he is still a good finisher if they provide him with the right service.

Been a decent start to the season for Atletico. Winning the Super Cup and making a good start to the season. They just need to be more consistent and i feel they can make a serious challange for the top 4.

i caught the higlights of barca's game and thought they looked impressive and villa is just pure class and will settle imediately. mourinho will struggle to take the title this year i think as the side on sunday looked disjointed. i was wondering what everyones thoughts were on how valencia would do without the star names of silva and villa etc ?

Who needs Villa when you got Aduriz. :bananadance But seriously though I think if Aduriz is able to get 20 odd goals this season and he is well capable of and Joaquin actually starts putting in performances like he did on the weekend I think top 4 should be comfortably achieved.

IMHO Aduriz is one of the most underrated strikers out there. I always wondered how many might he net in a top club

I like Aduriz as well. Between him and Soldado the goals will still be there for Valencia.
