Seeing as it looks a bit dead in the Planes, Trains and Automobiles forum, thought I'd put it in here. Anyone on here currently learning to drive? Had my first lesson today, thought it went pretty well. Have to say I was a tad nervous and about a mile into my very first drive I check my mirror and theres an Audi R8 there, my instructor tells me just to indicate and pull in, let him overtake and we'll carry on at our own pace, the R8 nails it off down a country lane
Should be starting in a couple of months tbh. I am so lazy when it comes to things like this. I'll probably still be a "bus w*nker" this time next year knowing me
Ah well, getting my license cost me over 18 months... The DVLA don't know a lot about the Dutch system though, when exchanging my Dutch license for a UK one I suddenly received a license for tractors... I've never driven on one and can't remember ever taking a test.
Yeah my instructor told me that. About the same time the Audi was behind, I went to change into 3rd and he said I just completely rushed it as I knew there was something right up behind me. By the end I was driving along at 30 quite steadily. Its not so bad around where I live, it's quite quiet at midday on a weekday, god knows what it must be like to learn in London. In all fairness, the Audi bit was literally just as I'd pulled onto the road for the first time!
Ive had 14 lessons, nearly ready for the test. Manouvres just take practice to get perfect, and once you get road sense you should be ok. Need to pass the theory soon!
Just did some practice 2 days ago.Since I was short on time,I had to just learn and settle on the accelerator and clutch part and the steering part, haven't moved onto gears yet.
Tbh the bit I thought would be the hardest was getting my head around changing gears as you've gotta coordinate your feet, steering wheel and gearstick at the same time but once you've done it once I found it pretty easy. Got my second lesson tomorrow, then 2 two hour sessions next week
I have been 17 for about 9 months now. Not started learning yet. I am in 6th form so don't need to drive there so i don't really need to learn. I have a job and i am saving up to start but the cost of it. By the time i have had all the lessons, tests, paid for insureance brought myself a car. I will have absolutley no money left.I think i might start nagging my mum and dad to get me some driving lessons for my 18th though.
I took about 18 months to pass my test, passed in November 2008 and haven't driven since Lost all my confidence now so I have no idea how i'll get on when I actually get behind the wheel.
Driving's so easy now. Seriously, I don't know what I was worried about on my lessons. Just stay calm, ignore the tosspots beeping their horns or overtaking you (such as me now tbh ) and don't rush things. ALWAYS check your mirrors though. I still do surprisingly!
Its not me on the road, its other people, Women yesterday on the roundabout, no indicators goes right round as I pull out and nearly hits me cos she was too busy seeing to her kid.
Had my second lesson today, and without sounding overconfident, I think I'm picking it up quite quickly. No problems at junctions and I'm fine whilst changing gear. I live in quite a hilly area and today I didn't have the right of way, so had to pull in and let the car through, then keep going. I was stopped for a good ten seconds but managed to pull away ok. Got two 2 hours sessions next week. And then I'm attempting the big badboy (Yeovil )
You lot are lucky to have pretty empty roads to learn on.Meanwhile I have to learn straight away in the craziest of traffics. It probably helps me though.
Done bang on 20 so far, still doing silly things wrong. Thought emergency breaking and the 3 point turn is piss easy, proper struggling to do reversing round the corner atm, always go into the curb.
I passed my test in April 2009 and only just bought a car 4 weeks ago. Thought it'd take make a while to get back into driving and remember everything I was taught but I've picked it up straight away and now have my own driving style. I've been told my many that driving instructors just teach you how to pass the test not how to drive, I think that's definately the case!
Yeah I agree. I have the advantage that I can have an hour lesson on the quieter roads or a 2 hour session driving to a busier place likes Yeovil and spending time there.
Yeah you don't really learn till you get your own experience... Most dangerous thing you can do is think you've nailed it already! Nearly 4 years driving for me now. Always assume everyone else is shit, chances are... they are..
