Liverpool invited into prestigious Club World Cup Would replace Confederations cup in Jun 2021 onwards, for clubs with 3 or more Champions league/European cups. '"The 24 clubs would share a pot of $2 billion (about £1.5 billion), with the winner earning as much as £100 million and a guaranteed minimum £50 million. The new Club World Cup would replace the low-profile annual event that takes place in December and FIFA would also scrap the Confederations Cup, to ease fears that it would mean more demands on the top players." **** me that's a lot of money for a pre season competition.
Damn! You may not realise it but this will be the precursor to the much maligned super league...although I'm also guessing it would involve clubs from all confederations. Only 8 European clubs qualify for the criteria! However it also raises concerns about 'fairness', the gap between the top and the rest getting even bigger and so on.
Don't like this idea at all, it just comes across as sickening with all that money involved. Haven't read the article, though how they get 24 teams when only 7 sides have 3 or more European Cups is beyond me.
A small point, but couldn't this lead to a complete monopoly of a handful of clubs in the other continents? The prize money will mean the teams that qualify from Africa, Oceania, Asia etc will get stronger, they will then strengthen, and qualify again in 4 years time, becoming even stronger etc.
Yep. Gotta admit I genuinely like the " idea " of a club world cup but the idea of who qualifies and how they qualify is just gonna make the rich richer and that is wrong imo. How can u have a club who finish 5th and 6th in serie A automatically qualify or if LFC or United have seasons like they have had in recent years and still qualify? It's nonsense.
Auckland City FC, who are virtually a semi pro club but the win the OFC champions league most years will get a £50m pay day every four years? They would go onto to dominate New Zealand football and Oceanic football even more. Similar situations would occur the other continents (other than Europe). It's like FIFA want complete domination of 3 or 4 clubs in every continent.
Ajax too. Automatic qualification would destroy competition in Dutch league. Funny how criteria is 3 European Cups but they are shoe horning in Juventus m
It just highlights how much FIFA and UEFA hype the Champions League over countrys league titles. Indeed.
The basic idea I think is pretty good, and more appealing than the confederations cup. But the setup they're thinking atm is all wrong imo.
Must refuse to try and use this information to have a sly dig. MUST REFUSE. MUST REFUSE...... I do like the idea in principle to have a Club World Cup held like the actual WC but a few things are headscratchers. 1. The qualification has to be fair and above board . No shoe horning in clubs. 2. Imagine the policing of 24 different clubs fans. Would be a nightmare. Much more difficult than countries imo. 3. There is way too much football as it is.
I don't like it. What gives the European Cup/Champions League it's prestige, is that it is the hallmark of European competition. Having this 'European club World Cup" will kind of lessen the value of the European Cup
I don't think it would, I think most fans in europe regard the CL still to be the pinnacle of club competition. The confederations cup doesn't lessen the value of the world cup.
