A bit of advice if you don't mind.

I have accepted a new job and have a choice of company car. Bearing in mind the tax costs (£8 quid a month difference between the Ford and VW, Audi A3 is on the list but it's very expensive on CC tax), would you go for a new Mondeo Zetec estate (2,0 TDCi 140 PS) or the new Passat SL estate with blue motion (142 PS)?

There is next to nothing between them and I can't make up my mind. Wass reckon? All advice is appreciated.

Passat blue motion. Easier on fuel, known for reliability. I don't know much about the mondeos, but i'd go for the passat.

Both superb in their class, you may as well toss a coin, you won't be disappointed with either of them.

I'd go for the Mondeo, I think it looks abit better, both good cars though.

BTW, do they HAVE to be estates?

I'm the new boy, Hence I have to go with whatever they decide. an estate is 'the designated vehicle suitable for purpose' so yes! Not my choice but I have to go with it.
Bear in mind I will be covering the South of England which means alot of time on the motorway (Mondeo) BUT a fair bit of time in London (Passat).
Out of interest, does anyone know if the 'bluemotion / engine off-on' effects the P11D burden?

Where's Clarkson when you need him eh? Testing a new Bugatti no doubt!

As you have stated, there's nothing between them and I genuinely don't know what to do. Flip a coin?

Audi do an A3 Estate? I never knew this.

Either of the other two would be great cars, I imagine. I'd probably go with the Mondeo, only cause it looks better.. Flipping a coin is your best bet.

I actually think the Mondeo estate looks nicer than the hatchback.

Passat driver = 50 year old with weird attractions to young boys. Has a boring life reading the Guardian.

Mondeo Driver = Mid 30's, early 40's, still likes his wife enough to atleast communicate with her, enjoys dogging on the weekends.

Also, is the Insignia available? I've heard they're a good car.

    Crikey!
You buggers have got me worried now.
I test drove the Passat earlier today (2.0 Tdi blue motion sport) and it was stunning.
Now I am concerned as I still speak to the Mrs and haven't been dogging yet.... for a few years!

EDIT: A colleague at work has got the Insignia and it's proper crap!

Leaning towards the VW Ross but haven't made up my mind yet.
Been away for a week so haven't really thought about it!
I have test driven both and still can't separate them TBH.

    Update fellas.
Got the Passat on a weeks trial. Turns out it's a 170 break SE model and has some serious toys as standard, no hand brake which takes some getting used to.
I have to admit it's a cracking drive. I have covered just shy of 760 miles on ONE TANK and this thing doesn't half shift!
I had the Mondeo last week which was equally good, probably more comfortable but nowhere near as good on fuel but it felt brilliant on the motorway.
I can't park the Passat for shit, it's huge (sensors needed methinks)!!
Worked out the tax burden and this year it's £51 a month tax for the 140 ps VW and £71 for the Ford BTW. The VW ramps up next year to nigh on the same as the Mondeo even though it has this stop / start thing which really is a pain in the arse!

I still don't bloody know what to do and I have to order it on Tuesday FFS!!
