Perfect case study of how to completely destroy a show and its audience. The BBC absolutely got what they deserved with this. And they lost Sue for Wimbledon too in the fall out.
Just a change of presenters and guests. As Sam says they got rid of Sue Barker and co then putting an actor/comedian in charge. Seemed to turn from a stand out sports quiz to one with gimmicks and chatting/banter.
It was the relationship between Sue Barker and the captains that really got the show to the heights it reached
Yeah it was a traditional quiz show with long established rounds and format. And the relationship between Sue and the captains just suited the tone of the show and gave it a loyal following. They ripped it up for no good reason and really treated Sue Barker quite badly considering her years of stellar service to the BBC, and the audience completely disappeared whilst failing to attract the younger audience that the changes were aimed at.
Watched it every week when Emlyn Hughes and Bill Beaumont were captains then stopped when they left. Always loved the what happened next round.
You go woke you go broke,it used to be a show about sport but recently it became more about diversity so The BBC shot themselves in the foot and ruined a show that was popular with sports fans,Sue Barker was a great host but the team captains lately i've never heard of them.
Replaced with a white male host though ! Guess you wouldn’t know the new captain’s particularly as Ugo Moyne isn’t that high profile a rugby player and Sam Querk seems to have made her name out of the 2016 GB hockey Olympic success the most.
As much as I'd long got out of the habit of watching it, there's still an element of sadness at seeing such a long-running show as Question of Sport "shelved" in the BBC's words. I'd hardly ever miss it in the days of Bill Beaumont and Ian Botham or Ally McCoist and John Parrott as captains while the dynamic between Sue Barker, Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell still made it highly watchable in later years, even as it just seemed to pop up randomly in the schedules. But what made it so good in its heyday was it was a proper sports quiz and appointing Paddy McGuinness as host to replace Barker was a clear signal it was no longer that. Perhaps they'll learn their lesson in a year or two and bring it back in a proper manner.
I think there's a lot of TV we all hardly ever missed and now don't even think about. this is the reality for all of these types of shows, they are simply not prime time. Younger audiences won't consume content like this on a periodic basis and the BBC have not even put old shows out on gold for oaps have they?
