Journey to the End of the Night by Celine is my favourite book. I would describe is as transgressive fiction or maybe literary fiction. These kinds of books tend to be my favourite.
I've never heard of this genre, yet looking at this list: Best Transgressive Fiction (747 books) I've read quite a few of them; Fight Club, Trainspotting, Catcher in the Rye, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Misery, The Shining etc. etc.
I think it's generally anything that 'transgresses' on convention. So a lot of sweary books but also a lot of interesting stuff about the human condition. Bukowski probably qualifies by modern standards but inly because he keeps mentioning women's arses.
