Anyone got a good cover for their car (other than a garage!) to save having to De-Ice it during the winter months?

I usually trap a black plastic bin liner under the wipers, when I remember.

The main thing i hate about the winter. I don't know any good tips on how to defrost it.

Well I'm no mechanic or nothing but the normal thing to do to get rid of ice would be to pour hot water over it. Or de-icer as mentioned above, both pretty simple.

That can crack the windscreen. As I have said, lukewarm water does the trick. And leaving the house 10 mins earlier.

Leaving your car running (unattended) is a crazy idea unless it is locked in a garage. If it is stolen any claim will be knocked back.

As said before, luke warm water does the trick but should be wiped off afterwards by leaving the wipers on, or just leave the house ten minutes earlier.
If it isn't windy a couple of sheets of newspaper under the wipers works too.

I've never tried it, but I remember someone once telling me they rub half a potato on the screen the night before and that keeps the frost at bay :hmmm Sounded like nonsense to me.

Pouring luke warm water on can also crack a windscreen. I tend to use a cover i can be arsed. If not, i use cold water with a touch of de-icer sprayed in....always does the trick

Or just use a coat of Rain X. That is also keeping frost at bay.

It is also against the law.

Quiet until your dad starts his car and leaves it running at 7 am you mean?

I've been pouring warm water on my windscreens for 30 years and never cracked one, I think it's a myth that goes back to the days before they were laminated, though I'm sure 'Gavin from Autoglass' would disagree . . .

I can tell you that I have repudiated a claim for someone who left their car for 30seconds whilst they ran back in their house to grab something at about 6:30am and in a very quiet, crime-free village in the middle of Wales.

    Never say never.

Why is it illegal to warm up your car on the driveway? Is that some kind of idling/pollution rule?

To be honest, I dont think most modern cars make any noise when they are idling. At least not enough to disturb neighbours. Maybe some diesels at a push?

Out here where we get real winters, a jug of warm water wont do you any good, you just start your car a few minutes before you leave. In fact a lot of people have remote starters built into their cars so they can do it from the comfort of their house. I guess if you were worried about getting it nicked off your drive, you could just lock the doors with the engine running and use a spare key to open them, but again a remote starter takes care of that problem also.

Because you cannot leave a car with the engine running, even if there's a passenger in it if the passenger doesn't have a driving licence.

At 7 am when all is quiet a car started from cold and ticking over on choke would sound noisier than it would during the day, especially as you say if it's a diesel.

Nah. I always make things hard for myself and just de-icer in the morning. Hate it and always say I will use a cover or a bin liner, but never do.

Just out of interest, what happens if your car is fitted with a turbo timer? Do you have to stay in your car until it switches off?
