Just 2 days before the first game kicks off the Qataris have announced a ban on all alcohol sales in all stadiums, a massive U-turn that won't please major tournament sponsors like Budweiser.

Alcohol sales banned at World Cup stadiums in Qatar

Alcohol will not be sold to fans at the World Cup's eight stadiums in Qatar after Fifa changed its policy two days before the start of the tournament.

Alcohol was set to be served "in select areas within stadiums", despite its sale being strictly controlled in the Muslim country.

Those in corporate areas of stadiums at the tournament will still be able to purchase alcohol.

The World Cup starts on Sunday when Qatar play Ecuador.

Budweiser, a major sponsor of Fifa, is owned by beer maker AB InBev and had exclusive rights to sell beer at the World Cup.

"Following discussions between host country authorities and Fifa, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the Fifa fan festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar's Fifa World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters," said a statement from world football's governing body.

"There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar's World Cup stadiums.

"Host country authorities and Fifa will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.

"The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev's understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022."
Budweiser posted a message on Twitter on Friday saying, "Well, this is awkward" before the post was later deleted.

Anybody watched the Netflix doc on FIFA corruption, it is very good. Crazy how ****ed that organisation was, and still is.

Stunned that Blatter took part in it. Doesn't really help his case. Qatar representative interviewed references "close to racist attacks" - this line isn't going to cease is it?

Good point, I haven't seen any cars with little flags so far, usually they are everywhere.

Will be a combination of the controversy around the awarding and timing of the World Cup making it difficult for people to get behind. And negativity over England's chances meaning that people aren't approaching the tournament with much anticipation.

Will all change if England get some momentum though. And it'll all start feeling real when the matches start on TV next week.

Allegations of fake fans being paid by Qatar out there. Videos of crowds of middle Eastern men in various countries shirts. Really, really bizarre.

Well bugger me, I didn't even realise it was an openly known thing!!
I'll never be able to not get excited about a world cup or euros, they're too sparse and too momentous not to, but this disgusting farce needs to be answered for. First and foremost these tournaments should be for the fans.

I think there's multiple types of fake/paid fans going on which might be it! Looks like they're using local/migrant workers to pose as fans, as well as were also going to be paying 'influencers' and more well known fans who were travelling over from abroad to post positive stuff about the country & tournament over social media channels etc. Sure I read about a few members of the England band being amongst them.

I think genuine fans of the countries who would take up that scheme would represent a tiny proportion. I've seen nothing about how many people are actually travelling to the tournament so I'm wondering if it's going to be an absolute wash out. The atmosphere will end up being shit if the England fans for example are 80% locals and migrant workers.

what a shitshow... the fact this scheme even existed was already ridiculous, the fact the knobheads are being shafted is just wild.

Fans paid to attend World Cup by Qatar have daily allowance cancelled
Fans who have travelled to Qatar as part of a controversial paid-for supporters programme have been told by Qatari authorities that their cash has been cut.

The Fan Leader Network is a scheme run by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the Qatari agency responsible for the World Cup. It has recruited supporters from around the globe, offering travel and accommodation and a place at the World Cup opening ceremony in return for enthusiasm and positive social media content. But the Guardian can reveal that a per diem payment for food and drink, upon which some supporters were depending, was cancelled just as fans were packing to travel to the Gulf.

Members of the Fan Leader Network from two European countries said their payments had been cancelled three days ago and that authorities had blamed the decision on the bad press which followed the revelation that fans were being paid.

Another two fingers to the football fans. Although it’s hard to have much sympathy for the gimps who took the shilling. Congratulations FIFA, another triumph.

    Fake news !

He's bound to be watching the Georgians getting a mauling in the Rugby tomorrow .

As for the beer controversy , unless it's some non league clubs you can't drink beer in a stadium in England only in the concourses & the fan zones outside Qatari grounds will still be selling shite Budweiser etc...
