In all honesty an outstanding player and the years have finally caught up with him..... I can remember watching the final of France 98 what a night that was.....I can remember him netting a penalty then a free kick in the last five minutes to break my heart aswell......The volley to see Real win the Champs League had me gobsmacked....

A truely gifted player who has actually given the Froggies someone to be proud of over the last ten years.....the next generation are coming through though with the likes of Ribery....I think he has finally made the right decision and I hope he enjoys the retirement with his wife and 4 kids......Just hope he don't try and find any form for Germany 06.....I wanna be able to go to work as an Englishman who's team won the trophy at least once in my lifetime... :)

One of the greats as you say...great skills and scoring wonderful goals.

France did lost at the last World Cup without him but time is catching up with ZZ.

In a way I'm glad he's retiring. Still at the top level. If he'd have carried on for a few seasons it could have slightly tarnished the reputation of a true great.

    Well said GW

Zidane is the greatest player i've ever had the priviledge of watching. Amongst other greats i have seen perhaps only Baggio or Redondo might run him close but El Zid was a real favourite of mine. A true legend in every sense of the word - one of the greatest players in the history of the game, the best French footballer ever and arguably the best that's been since Maradona.

I'll really miss watching his artistry on the pitch; although those countless goals he has scored will keep his memory alive for a long time to come. His first touch, his technique, ball-control, passing ability, and of course - his trademark "roulette" were simply mesmerising and he made it all look so elegant, so delightfully easy.

A very sad day for football.

If you happen to have some time on your hands, watch this video and re-live the magic of some of his best goals for Juventus, Real Madrid, France and Bordeaux http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/ZIDANE/video/58571

Ronaldinho isnt as good as Zidane in his pomp, i dont think anyone ever was better than him.

Ronaldinho may get there one day, but hes never reached the level this man got to. Just unbelievably silky velvety type of play that just dominated massive games. Watch DVD's of france 98' and euro 200 and youll be gobsmacked.

Best player in my generation and deserves his spot in to big 4 of Maradonna, Pele, Di Steffano and Zizou.

Au revoir Zizou...One of the best players I've seen live, one of the all-time greats.
