That's actually quite a good draw for us. Banana skin territory for Charlton, good crowd. Definitely a chance of it being on TV too. I wouldn't mind a lunchtime Sunday kick off, home for a roast after a few lunchtime beers.
Away to Stockport bit meh; played them often enough during our league stint so that cuts the fun, and they're going well enough in League One to beat us comfortably you'd reckon.
Trying to think positively after Barnet getting dullsville away to Exeter. If we win I'm sure we will be handsomely rewarded with Plymouth away.... At least we get to stand in the Hives old away terrace...
Not denying it'd be a bad draw for an FGR fan. Long trip, strong opposition, probable loss. But haven't you only played Stockport away once in the FL? Probably a couple more times in NL.
Loads of long old journeys in that draw. Sort of fixtures which highlight why I'm pretty apathetic about the FA scrapping replays. If we're level after 90 mins no one wants a trip to Bromley a few days later. Just settle it on the day and move on.
Funny that - I think the opposite. We’ve potentially got the opportunity to bring Bradford back to the EBB under lights with a decent crowd and a good chance of beating them.
I thought there was no replays from first round onwards? That was the whole point of the national league cup wasn’t it? (Not that I agree with it, just to clarify)
There aren't any from R1 on now. But my point is, I'm not that bothered. Replays are mostly poorly attended extra games. Only any good if you get some glamour money spinner. Take a big Champ or Prem team back to theirs or yours for a sell out. But playing an another also-ran in the 3rd-5th tier mid week never really appealed much to me.
I get that RB. I know it might be strange. I'm coming at it from the financial point of view. In this our first season for years, when any money generated from the Cups will go back into the team/club, I wanted a winnable home tie, (I know there's no such thing in football, but you hopefully get what I mean), which we win and this would have been a good tie for the second round. Because financially we have banked £9,375 for winning 4th qual. round. Win in the 1st round is worth £45k, as opposed to £15k for losing. Winning in the 2nd round is worth £75k, losing is £20k So if everything had worked out to what I was hoping for, we'd have made: we'd bank £63,375 + gate receipts less match day costs. plus any TV money possibly. So that's where I was coming from, even if we didn't make the 3rd round. Would be a nice unbudgeted bonus and helped Kev out a bit hopefully. Now, it's a big ask, but who knows what sort of team Charlton will put out and if on TV then hopefully Friday night under lights, as The Hall always rocks on evening games in the cup, whatever competition it is. Pull off a shock and who knows. it ain't over 'til it's over. It just looks a lot harder now.
That’s a fair response and it’s just sad that this is how most supporters (myself included) consider the FA Cup.
We’re talking about a side that got taken to a replay by Cray Valley PM and then beaten by Gillingham in this competition last season. Southend have every chance of beating us and it would not surprise me one bit if they did.
Wycombe away is about the possible draw you could get. Team in top 5 of div 1,who get less at home than us. This season we have played, Southend Sutton Dagenham Aldershot Woking Wealdstone Solihull (only club not around London) Biggleswade. getting fed up with travelling down to London every other week.
Thanks Rb, we always seem to find common ground. There is no doubt it is going to be a great day and a good atmosphere and one I am still looking forward to, as with our recent cup record, we have had far too few days like this. It's just a round too early, for me that is. However, if we won I'd be as happy as Larry obviously.
