Firstly don't judge me... Dreamt lastnight that Jamal Fyfield now at Braintree scored for England....I even set him up....I digress! He was a massive wind up merchant for Borehamwood when he played us(Barnet). At the time you hated him but you also enjoyed it. Other players spring to mind who had similar banter and would antagonise fans Tony Roberts Daggers keeper Kevin Ellison Morecambe Our own Ian Hendon who had it down to an art form. What players past and present walk or walked the thin line of having a bit of personality. I'm all for it
Ashmore and Ellison were in a league of their own. I struggle to name anyone else with their pedigrees and longevity. Keepers probably deserve a separate category. Danny Potter loved to pinch his 5 - 10 yards at a free kick, whilst egging on the crowd.
Can we include Pretend managers in this. Because "Uncle Darren" is winding us up no end, And its not funny any more.
Tony Roberts was the king, but in a good way he loved the banter with the fans and, secretly, we loved it too. I had the good fortune to be on the groundstaff and met him a few times when Daggers visited and he’s the nicest bloke imaginable. Ashmore is just a twat who loves to play the victim, usually starts the chopsing and cries when he gets it back.
Walker at Barnet last season. Southend fans giving it and then started foaming at the mouth when he, rightly, gave it back
I absolutely love a panto villain when we play against them, gives the game an edge but in a brilliant comical way. Jacob Hazel played the role to perfection when Boston won at our place the other month. Richard Brodie was great at it for us in the past
Jon Parkin always sticks on mind. Comments on his weight at every game but he always scored and gave it back
Lawrie Walker is an adept hand at this art. It’ll be interesting to be on the opposite side of it for once!
We pretty much had a squad of them under Paul Doswell, but I feel Jamie Collins, Nick Bailey and Craig Eastmond were among the more prominent
He even went away to the Woking fans on his own to celebrate in our faces when you scored to make it 1-0 at the rec. Did make it funny when he gave away a penalty in the last minute though. Rendell weirdly never gave any back to our fans despite getting abuse all game. Alan Julian is easily my favourite. Gives it and takes it perfectly.
I will say, Kinsella and Casey were captains that absolutely got the derby. As much as it was horrible being on the wrong end of it, derbies should have a bit of bite like that Rendell I think there was probably a small amount of respect from his stint with you
