I'm in favour of this proposal.

70mph is too slow in this day and age. When these speed limits were set cars had cross ply tyres, drum brakes, no brake servos, no power steering, no air bags, no laminated windscreens and no seatbelts.

    Indeed.

I drive 80mph on the motorway more times than not anyway, so if this new speed limit were to come in I'd no doubt up my average speed to 90mph :shrug

Me too. I read somewhere that police forces no longer nick people who are driving under 82mph on the motorway.

I'm as guilty as anyone of pushing the limits, and unforgivably all too often find myself driving well into 3 figures on the M60.

I agree, its far too easy to get into 3 figures now a days.

I dont have an overly high performance car but it cruises absolutely no problem at all at 100.

They should increase the speed limit to 80 as a minimum, British motorways are the safest roads in Europe.

I thought it was 90 in the US. Well at least on the West Coast.

Must be different in the East Coast.

70 is certainly too slow. 80 is a step in the right direction in my view. Got to be careful 90 doesn't become the new 80 though.

I go well over the limit on average (in the middle lane right Stretty :p), but what I have found is that going 80 instead of 70 for a journey over an hour and a half which I do most weekends only knocks a mere 15 minutes max off my journey time, but hurts my fuel economy quite considerably more.

Tis true. I remember back in the late 80s/early 90s, driving a Fiesta 957cc - money was tight, ok!!!

Anyway even with that pathetic engine I could get just over 90mph from it. Says it all really about the 70mph limit being outdated. But I have to say, 90mph in that particular Fiesta was to this day the most terrifying 90mph I've ever done!! The body of the car would shudder violently and the windows would rattle. It was a combination of fear and adreniline which made me keep my foot down. That Fiesta at that speed honestly felt as if it would literally violently explode!! That or the wheels would all fall off. Awful car, and driving memories which make me wince.

    Are they?

I'm just saying that if most people go an extra 10 miles faster it works out a lot more expensive for the sake of a few minutes.

I'm sorry but is the idea of this forum not to debate? Some of your posts are utterly pointless.

Yes I know, I read your post.

I'm sorry too, but since you chose to refer directly to me in your post I thought perhaps you'd welcome my opinion on it.

That was an opinion? I though it was another of your soulless smart-assed replies. Forgive my confusion.

Of course it was my opinion. You tell us you like to drive up the centre lane of the motor way at 80 mph but you don't think the 15 minutes this saves you is worth the extra cost of fuel. I suggest then that you don't do it, since you've implied yourself the cons outweigh the pros.

But never mind, have another of your self induced spats if you wish. I imagine that was your intention when including me in your post. :duke

Brake and environmental groups don't like this proposal. Therefore it must be a good thing.

If they'd also start clamping down on all the right-lane-hoggers and give serious fines for that then the traffic might finally start flowing a bit better. Just like today, I've seen loads of people on the M1 going 60 in the right lane, while they could easily move to the left, annoys the hell out of me. All traffic should be in the left lane unless overtaking, they need to enforce this rule far stricter!

I know what you mean, but unfortunately some people think such behaviour is clever . . . :shrug
