Went to see the Arctic Monkeys on Wednesday night. Great gig, mainly because although it’s called The Car tour, they only play three tracks off the less than great album. And now I’m in Adelaide, acting the groupie because they’re headlining the Heaps Good festival tonight. Alex Turner in my mind has become one of the true great, exceptional talents and he looks very comfortable with the label. His confidence on stage is incredible.

The Heaps festival yesterday was a massive introduction to popular Australian artists. Ocean Alley and G flip have got a huge fan base if yesterday's performances were anything to go by, but Spacey Jane stole all the thunder when they came on. I'd played a couple of their songs on YT so I'd know at least two numbers of their set but was less than enthusiastic on first listen. However, live they are a completely different animal and they got the crowd rocking. The band that followed them was Scottish band Chvrches, who were excellent and a lovely first course before the mains came out. The Monkeys played a different set than on Wednesday, with just the one song from The Car album, then it was hit after glorious hit for an hour and a half. Lovely stuff..

Got tickets to see the Counting Crows in April. I might actually get to see them this time as I also had tickets to see them in Bournemouth many moons ago but the lead singer was too ill to perform so cancelled at the last minute. Shame they didn’t think to tell me this before I boarded the plane in Guernsey that morning. I ended up paying a small fortune in air fares and hotel just to go and see the latest Star Trek movie instead.

Two days to go and counting. The big news is that Frank Turner is in town and he's doing a solo set as support. The lead singer can send a sick note for all I care just as long as Frank can still play..

Counting Crows were very good, they've been performing for a couple of decades now so their gigs almost run on rails, the highlight of the night by far though was Frank Turner. He played around seven songs, told a couple of very endearing stories (the one about his dad was eye opening, I had no idea), and I was quite surprised how many people left after he'd finished, there were quite a few around me that had only gone to see Frank and then left, very strange considering the Crows would have been performing for free...

Saw The Lemonheads on my birthday on the 31st.

Evan was in a little bit.... what's the word... of a good mood. But it was fun.

He gets a bad wrap sometimes, rightfully so on certain occasions.... I've seen them all over the east coast since I was 18. I'm 37 now. But it was really nice to see him on point, having fun and a decent audience loving every minute of it.

    Here's a clip. :)

The Lemonheads on Instagram: "IF YOU DIDN’T LIKE THE SHOW LAST NIGHT MY BEST RECOMMENDATION ; get help you have A DEEP SEATED SELF esteem issue or two … you should really see somebody. A shrink mental health, professional, social worker someone of that nature find some hobbies try birdwatching it worked for me. God bless you and please don’t waste your money buying tickets to our shows. #redflag / #doubleblackdiamond LOVEVAN"

Bloody helI! didn't even know Evan was still going. I think it must be close to 35 years since I bought their first album, always though Dando was destined for greatness but he fell way short. Great to see the band are still touring though, may look out for them if they ever come down under..

Just out of interest what are concert ticket prices like in the UK at the minute? I only ask as Coldplay announced a one off gig here in Perth in November. Friends of ours got tickets in pre sale but paid $500 AUD which is about £270. My reaction was “why the f**k would anyone pay that to see Coldplay”. Really though, whoever it is, that is a scandalous cost of a ticket price. No surprises they quickly added a 2nd date! I am still waiting for a few bands to come here again that COVID wrecked - makes me wonder how much they will charge if/when they come.

Scandalous prices. I wouldn't pay $5 to see Coldplay, never mind the other two noughts. U2 were charging $360 in Melbourne last year but they quickly dropped to $180 when there wasittle interest at those prices. I paid $140 to see Nick Cave in November which I think is value for money.

    Speaking of gigs . . .

British pop singer Matty Healy's protest stunt at a concert in Malaysia has sparked fury from LGBT activists and allies in the country.

Many have described the 1975 singer's sweary rant at the Malaysian government - and kiss with a male bandmate - as an act of "performative activism" that would make their lives even harder.

Homosexuality remains a crime in Malaysia, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Conservative Islam remains the dominant political and cultural force in the country, restricting sexuality, alcohol and other perceived threats to traditional values and "public decency" standards.

In a statement after Friday's show, a source close to the band said Healy had wanted to stand up for the LGBT community.

But while many locals appreciated the intent, they say he crashed a precarious political environment for LGBT Malaysians and caused greater damage.

"Unfortunately, local activists are now having to deal with the fall-out and the potential policies and restrictions that might come from it," said Dhia Rezki, an activist with Kuala Lumpur-based support group JEKAKA.

    What did Healy do?

Last Friday, indie-pop band The 1975 was headlining a music festival in the capital Kuala Lumpur when Healy - who has a history of derogatory comments about women and minorities - launched into a tirade against Malaysia's anti-LGBT laws and kissed his bandmate in protest.

He had already been drinking on stage and destroyed a drone belonging to concert organisers. Attendees reported him spitting on fans.

Swaggering around the stage, the 34-year-old insulted the Malaysian government and said he was "furious" he'd made "a mistake when we were booking shows".

"I don't see the [expletive] point, right, I do not see the point of inviting the 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with," he said.

"I'll take your money, you can ban me, but I've done this before and it doesn't feel good," he said. He then grabbed his bandmate's face and kissed him.

The band's set was shut down soon after. "Alright, we just got banned from Kuala Lumpur, see you later," he yelled to the audience.

The next day authorities ordered the closure of the entire Good Vibes festival which still had two days to go and other international acts due to perform like The Kid Laroi, The Strokes and Ty Dolla $ign. Festival goers had paid hundreds of dollars to attend, many travelling from other parts of Southeast Asia.

Healy and his band flew out a few hours later. They cancelled the rest of their Asia tour dates - they'd also been due to play in devoutly Muslim Indonesia and Taiwan.

    What's the response?

While Healy was ranting to the crowd in Kuala Lumpur, he said: "I'm sure a lot of you are gay and progressive and cool" - comments which drew scattered cheers.

But videos from the night also show the audience's silence and fans' growing unease. TikToks show people's faces falling and locals grimacing.

"Just sing the damn song," mutters one girl in a pink headscarf and glittery eye make-up. "I mean you come here and then insult our country..." she says, swapping glances with her friend in the clip viewed millions of times. She captioned the video "Iykyk".

That was reflective of the broader reaction across Malaysian social media on the weekend.

The TikTok commentary was overwhelmingly critical, and in many of the most popular videos, young LGBT Malaysians are furious.

"I'm seeing a lot of like 'Oh Matt Healy stood up for the rights of the Malaysian queer community' - No, Matt Healy, you're an idiot. Do you have any idea of repercussions… do you have any idea how hard it is for queer people to just exist now?" one user said in another TikTok that's been viewed more than 2m times since Saturday.

"I hate this white saviour complex of people coming to regions like Southeast Asia - with no prior research whatsoever to what the culture is, or the repercussions of doing acts like this - and ruining it not for them but for the people who actually live here."

Young Malaysians told the BBC they felt the act reflected a patronising Western attitude to Asia.

"It is very reminiscent of the whole white saviour complex, this narrative again and again of how 'uncivilised or un-progressive' the people in the East are and how the white person has to come into a country to save or better the people," said Dee May Tan, an arts creative in Kuala Lumpur.

"The way he went about it was just purely culturally insensitive. Like it's very self-righteous, entitled, ignorant and doesn't gel with what he's trying to promote."

The criticism is in part also fuelled by Healy's reputation. There's a long-running internet joke that his bandmates cut him off on stage before he says something problematic. British-Japanese singer Rina Sawayama at Glastonbury last month called him out for his racist comments about Asian people.

Earlier this year in a podcast, he mocked American rapper Ice Spice, mimicked Asian and Hawaiian accents and asked the show's hosts to do impressions of Japanese people labouring in concentration camps. He has apologised for some of the comments, saying people misinterpreted his sense of humour.

Oh yes, Recovering The Satellites and Hardy Candy are both very good records, This Desert Life is also worth a listen even if it’s only to discover the track, Colour Blind..

Sir Paul has just announced he's taking the Got Back tour down under in October. He's playing Melbourne's Marvel stadium on the 21st and tickets go on sale on the 7th August. It'd be rude not to wouldn't it?

I don't know what a Cardi B is, but I'm sick and tired of people throwing stuff at performers. I've lost count of the number of gigs I have been to where the show is stopped so they can tell people to quit throwing coins/ socks/ beer cups/ phones etc.

Remember back during the punk days when you gobbed on them and they gobbed back? Never stood too close to the front in those days..
