(taken from skysports) Sheffield United are set to name Bryan Robson as successor to Neil Warnock on Tuesday. The Blades were on the lookout for a new manager following Warnock's decision not to extend his contract at the end of the season. Warnock failed to keep the South Yorkshire side in the Premiership, however, that has not deterred Robson's interest in the club. The former Middlesbrough, Bradford and West Brom boss has held talks with United and is now expected to be appointed with Brian Kidd his assistant. "I've had initial enquiries from Sheffield United," he confirmed to Sky Sports News over the weekend. "I said when I left West Brom in October I'd like to get back into the game. "I enjoy the management side and the coaching of the players. "Sheffield United are a big club and the type of challenge I'd be looking for."
guess only time will tell with this appointment, his record for getting promotion isnt bad but i would've prefferred coleman, he has got the well known and respected name that could attract players to the club, his first job has got to be trying to persuade the players more likely to want to leave to stay and fight for the club and fans who supported them through thick and thin last season
We will regret getting rid of Warnock. I dont get why people want Coleman, what has he done? Led Fulham to mid table obscurity year after year. Not feeling too optimistic right now, Robson didnt do too well at West Brom this seaon, they were in the same position as we will be come August.
fayed never backed coleman like he did with tigana (12 mil on the super striker that was marlet wasnt it?) and he had to sell his better players, warnock had taken the club as far as he could i think, he wasnt up to the job when it came to the premiership
Precisely. Mid table obscurity. It took Warnock 6 or 7 seasons to get you promoted and only 1 season to relegate you again. Chris Coleman's Fulham played decent football on the ground and I would rather watch that than some of the crap that is served up by some managers.....
had we not had such a fanstastic season in 02/03 when we reached the semis of both cups before finishing 3rd in the league and losing in the play off final then im sure that would've been the season we would've gone up, the cup runs, while superb, probably cost us in the long run coleman took over a fulham team that was already in the prem, had a decent squad there already and had at least sum funds there warnock has taken utd from the brink of lower league obscurity to the premiership, ok so it took a bit longer than most blades fans would like, but as dangerous_si said in a previous thread, he's leaving the club in a much better state than he found it in, yes he may have not been tactically the best manager but he has brought us a long way from where we were when he took over. we havent all got a chairman prepared to pump funds in, weve had to sell our best players year after year to balance the books before, sadly we will probably lose our best player in jagieka but at least its nothing to do with the clubs financial position
Is that aimed at John Madejski? If so you may want to check your facts as it is a myth that he "pumps" money in. I'm not denying that puts money into the club but if you have a look back over our transfer dealings you will see that it isn't as much as many think.
I think you're just paranoid, i think it was just a general statement rather than Reading specific. Reading if anything are an example that it can be done on limited funds.
i was more fulham with fayed, they've had the money spent over the years and still only achieved at team scrapping it out in the bottom rungs of the prem, warnock has hardly spent any money considering the time he spent in the job, sadly he did waste a fair bit of the money he spent, his love of strikers is well known and laurens ten heuvel (sp?), akinbiyi, johnson, horsfield etc will never be ranked up there with the signings of the year! bring back the chief wayne allison!
But he did finally get it right with Hulse, and surprisingly Stead. I believe that if Hulse had not got injured you would not have been relegated. However if I was a Blades fan I would be concerned about having Robson appointed as manager, but you never know.......
i think you're prolly bang on with hulse, losing him was a huge blow. would've rather had coleman but robson looks like he's got it so all we can do now is get behind him and the team and see what happens.
robson has held the premiership trophy before , lets hope he does again dreaming costs nothing , even liverpool fans dream of doing it
Along with the other 80 odd clubs in league football you mean? Still, I bet it'll be nice to see us lifting the cup on Wednesday, might bring back some memories of actually winning silverware. Back in the day..
Robson can attract "big names" and maybe sometimes wasnt backed by the board at Albion. Problem with Robson IMO is that he is far too negative in his approach to games. When we got relegated from The Premiership last year he insisted on playing an ageing Kevin Campbell up front on his own towards the end of that season when we really needed to win games. Hope he proves me wrong because as a player he was my hero, but good players dont always make good managers.
Thing is with Robson he's got an excellent record as a Championship manager. The be all & end all of next season is promotion. If he can replicate his Middlesboro' success then it's all good. Once we're back in the Premiership then that may be the time to start thinking about a new manager because to be honest his Prem record is sh|te. BUT he's not managing a prem club he's managing a CCC club & his record is second to none on that basis.
I agree, Coleman is IMO a good manager , Fulham's home record under Coleman is a good as any top 6 club .......why he couldnt get them to play away from Craven cottage only he knows but I still think he is a good young manager... As for Robson , well he might get you back in the Premiership ,maybe, but you know whats going to happen the following year.
