It’s interesting the PL clubs and managers are in agreement with the idea but many lower league ones aren’t. Not much from the Championship sides really but guess reaction might be mixed depending on priorities.
More money for them via the European comps than via a "rare" replay in the FA Cup where match day income is shared and worth far more £ for £ to a team down the leagues. Can you see top teams asking to play fewer Champions League games due to player health and wellbeing and the schedule?! I know for us, our run in the FA Cup last season was a welcome boost financially but you can't always guarentee a run or a big draw so when it comes for smaller teams it's huge. On number of games, we've played near enough the same as Man City with a much smaller squad and there'll be other teams who will have played more!
It was the correct call. It sucks and I hate it but it was correct. Hopefully the offside rule is changed soon.
Problem is, it comes back to being subjective which is already part of the problem with VAR. No matter what they change the rule to, there will always be instances like this where its right on the cusp of on or off. It's better (if having VAR) that they have it as all or nothing.
Seems harsh but at least it will be quick. The only other way to do it, is to literally flip offside on it's head. Rather than any part of your body past the last man is being off, it could be flipped so if any part of your body is in line then you are onside. Offside when there is literally a mm of daylight. As I was typing it, I was liking that idea.
Who really wanted it in the first place though? A few managers and pundits with their fancy slow mo tablets? VAR was never going to get everything “right “ as most decisions are subjective. If that is what people expected out of VAR then they were mistaken and should have been told so at start rather than being promised it would clear things up and there would be nothing go to debate . TBH the main issue for fans seems to be how slow the system is and the lack of communication more than anything else.
I think we know that the majority didn't want it, but as always it's the needs of the top few that get pandered to. It was never going to work for the reasons you mentioned, and all it's done is giving everyone a reason to say they're all corrupt.
Yes no doubt had the penalties been given and Everton lost we'd be hearing and seeing tweets from them and their fans bemoaning biased and cheating. It's actually made the relationship between officials and others much worse plus probably given them the feeling they are undermined each each as anyone would if someone was told they have done something wrong which in their view wasn't.
