On Thursday I will be having my first ever driving lesson (I know me being 19 this will be 'gay' or 'tragic' or 'sad' to some, but this is the first time since I was 17 that I can afford it)

Anyway, I am not exactly looking forward to it, I have horrible visions of not being able to accelerate properly, stalling several million times and just generally being shit at it.

Does anyone who isn't gonna take this opportunity to take the piss want to be kind and offer me any advice? :)

    GAY!!!!!!!!
    (joke)

What you have said above makes you exactly the same as every single other person that is driving a car for the first time. Relax. You will be suprised how quick you will pick up the basics.

I was amazed on my first lesson when we actually went out on to the public roads!

My advice would be, see if you can put extra practice in with a friend/family member who can drive in a car park whenever you can. Helped me alot.

I'd say this is only a good idea when the learner has picked up the basics, otherwise the friend/relative could pass on bad habits that will take more lessons to rectify? :duke

That could happen, but for me it worked the other way around. I got my dad to teach me all the basics for a few months, then started lessons. For some reason I had decided I wanted to know how to drive a car before I took proper lessons. So therefore these lessons simply taught me the correct way to pass the test, and I only had 8 until I was put in for it. I actually failed that due a really stupid mistake by myself, but re booked straight away and passed no worries. Saved me a lot of money.

I was really nervous first time but I ended up passing after just 25 lessons. The best advice I can think of is if you make a mistake or do something wrong then forget about it and dont worry because alot of the time I found myself doing one thing then panicking and letting it build up and making other mistakes.

That's the kind of thing I would do.

The first mistake I make, I can just picture myself go all mushy in the brain, think fk fk fk and think I am crap.

But hey, hope the introductory lesson pays off. Friday 9-11 it is now, get it out of the way early eh... never know, I might end up enjoying it, until the reversing lesson :(

The driver will take you somewhere extremely quiet. I never left 2nd gear when I first learnt.

The instructor will take you around a quiet area first, so there's nothing to worry about. It takes a few lessons to get the hang of the clutch, changing gear etc.

I had 20 driving lessons with an instructor the rest with my dad made it cheaper that way to get the basics out of the way.

Not being bigheaded but I think I'm at a better standard than people who just went with companies like BSM.

Yes but this is only for 50cc engines you have to take the CBT so you can go on the road with a scooter though.

You have to be 17 for a car unless you are disabled then it's 16.

I've took 9 lessons, and have begun to hate it. It's simple, and you get some right bellends who don't know what they are doing on the road.

Just started a while ago, took about 7/8 lessons and have been very surprised by it all, i thought at first i would find it hard, but its rather simple. In my first lesson the instructor just gave me the keys and let me go, i truly believe the only way to learn something quickly is through experiencing it first hand...

You feel that your present level of motoring knowledge and experience qualifies you to judge other road users at this moment in time?

The good thing about new drivers is they indicate , so annoying when people indicate late or not at all especially at roundabouts :(

Watch out for buses. They take up all the room.
