Right, as some of you will know i passed my test back in June, and my Dad has said he will buy me a new car. My sister has a Peugeot 107, and my Dad brought her that and it cost around 7k. My dad has said he will buy me one of those, but a newer version because that was around 3 years ago. I would be getting it in black. The main reason he said he will buy me this is because it is a 1.1 engine i think, so it would be cheap to insure, which i would pay myself so that is very important. It also the cheapest car to tax etc. I will have to wait untill September though, as that is when the new number plate is out. Main think i want to ask is does anybody own one, or driven one? What is it like etc? I know it is not the best looking car and not the fastest etc, but the main thing is it is reliable, and cheap to insure. Hopefully the picture below works. There a picture
I've always avoided french cars, used to have a shocking reputation for reliability. If you want bang for your buck i'd pick a japanese/asian car. All the little extras (parking sensors, alloys, electric windows etc) tend to be cheaper as well. IMO you should make a shortlist of cars that are similar (fiesta, corsa, yaris etc), test drive each one and make a decision from there.
Like Shake id always avoided French motors until my mate phoned me about a Peugeot 306 D low milage full service history with it. Had it just over 3 years now and passed the MOTG first time of asking in all cases. Not had a single problem with it, good dependable motor. If you know very little about cars and take somebody with you who does . I think you could find somebody who will find flaws in every make of car if you asked round enough tbh.
That is not a proper Peugeot. The 107, the Aygo and the C1 are basically the same car built in the Czech Republic. The 1000cc engine is a Daihatsu. I don't know how good the engine is, but according to Wiki, it won International engine of the year for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 for the sub 1 litre engine category.
As i said the main thing and most important is insurence, i have looked at a Corsa, but insurence is 2k plus, on the 107, i have rang around a couple and the best i have got is £1150, which is very good for somebody my age.
Your Dad treats you to 3 cruises in the space of 3 months, buys you a 7k car, then forces you to pay your own insurance? Anyway, personally I'd recommend a Corsa or Fiesta over one of those.
He does'nt force me :L I just don't mind paying for it! As i said though mate, they cost more in insurence etc.
I think you're doing the right thing. Assuming you can live with something like a 107 then go for it, insurance is dead money and the less you can pay the better, at least until you've earned some NCB.
£1150 is exceedingly cheap for someone who just passed at 17. Mine will probably be that-ish when renewal time comes for my 3rd years with 2 years no claims..
Exactly, im not exactly into cars anyway, so i don't really care what it looks likes, as long it is reliable, and cheap to run, which that is, think my sister said you can get 70-80mpg out of it.
I agree with Chris, £1,150 seems very low. I've been wanting a 3 or 4 year old 1.2L Fiat Grande Punto for a while now, but after being quoted £2,500+ it's just a pisstake tbh. So i've gotta go for a smaller engine, although 1.2 is pretty low. I've looked at Vauxhall Corsa 1.0i 12V Life, but the insurance is still too high on that for some reason. Who knows what I'll end up with. All the 1.0L's look shite, but I guess as long as you've got a car, and are on the way to claiming NCB it dosen't matter what you drive.
The 'reason' the thieving insurance companies will tell you is that you might drive your 1.0 Corsa into a £200,000 Bentley. Personally I think the whole insurance industry is a rip-off and the prices being quoted to young drivers will just encourage more of them to drive uninsured.
It's ridiculous really. Also, I've been told (although it's quite obvious) that they've put the prices up because of the amount of people putting in for silly claims, like wiplash etc when they've been in accident. Obviously younger drivers are the easiest to target for company's to get their money back. Indeed. I'm better off risking it and taking the £200 fine and 6 points or whatever it is.
And then your insurance will be even higher. Do it again and your banned. Do it again and you're looking at prison. No way out lol.
I'm obviously not going to do it, but I'm sure many people would. Anyway, got my first car today! 1.0L Vauxhall Corsa.
