Their managerial appointments after Cooper have been dire, Edwards excluded, gives our run of managers after Cook left a run for its money.
Why is it that owners of football clubs, who know little about football suddenly believe they have the insight to appoint managers of their clubs? We had an appalling run of managers under Ron's time. He got lucky with Tilly, but didn't make his appointment permanent until he finished the season well up the L2 table and got us to our first LDV final against Blackpool. The run after that speaks for itself. Then after that, apart from Phil Brown 1st spell, nothing stuck. Our last year's in the EFL were horrific manager wise, Bond, Molesely, Campbell, Brown again. When we appointed Maher it was by a committee of people that knew the club, budgets and football and what was needed down here. Tom our CEO, Gary Lockett board member and Stan. All of a sudden, we got a proper manager who knew who he wanted to work with and knew the club. And Martin was kept well away from it, until the final say so. Thank Gawd.
Agree with a few other posters on here, I have no issue with Forest Green Rovers. In my mind National League is their natural level, and I imagine they will stabilise here. When I first started watching the Shots in the mid 2000's FGR were perennial strugglers, but always seemed to beat us! Obviously the investment from Dale Vince and the subsequent promotions has drawn attention and criticism. But in my view there are plenty of worse causes a Chairman could be promoting than veganism and green energy.
To be fair their managerial appointments before Cooper were also dire. For a few years we all looked on in disbelief as Vince let Hockaday waste tons of money season after season and never got them up. Then Pennock was just as bad. National Legaue is their level. For years they were a decent sized club at the top level of non legaue football and nothing is wrong with that. It'll be interesting to see how well Vince funds them now
There used to be a rather emotional Alfreton fan on the other board back in the day, hope he's enjoying himself more these days!
We beat them at their place in the last preseason game, week before the season started, and I put them in an acca to be relegated, think they were about 8/1. Another team back to their natural level. First season in quite a few years that we haven’t had a basket-case brother drop out (Oldham, Hartlepool, Notts, Chesterfield, Tranmere, Bristol Rovers etc). Don’t think either will run away with it next year, expect both to be mid-table.
I've had to do a password reset to reactivate this old account. Nice to see the warm welcome as we slip back home
