Admittedly I haven't watched much of Trippier at Atletico so perhaps he has improved tenfold under Simeone but the weakest part of his game is defensively.

It'd be criminal for him to start on the left ahead of Chilwell or Shaw.

Wasn't he suspended for months? I also have zero issue with him starting just think it shouldn't be out of position.

I’ve decided lads, it’s ok, he’s playing right wingback. Don’t worry about it.

He did squire. Kind of. Lwb. But well spotted.

    *played LB vs Iceland!

They probably will but I hope they don't & try to get yesterday's near tragedy out of their minds completely .

If they have Banks , Cohen , Wilson , Stiles , J.Charlton , B.Charlton , Moore , Ball , Hurst , Peters & Hunt on the back of their shirts & aspire to tournament winners I'd be more happy .

It'll be scoooorchio at Wembley , can see it being a slow match & a 1-1 draw .

I see no reason to play a RB at LB ahead of two LBs

I don’t think there’s enough room on the back of a shirt for all those names.

You gotta think outside the box man. Pickford number 10!

What does it say to the two decent actual left backs when he'd rather play a right back there instead?

if Southgate wanted to “spring a surprise” on Croatia with the Trippier inclusion

What a bizarre team selection - but I’m not gonna let it ruin my optimism. C’MON ENGLAND.

I can’t actually believe that selection. Sterling starting over Grealish is a questionable enough call but the defence(!)

hope I’m wrong but seems to confirm all of the fears I had about Southgate before the tournament

    Fooks sake!

At least it is a back 4 though. Glad he’s not gone back 5 AND 2 defensive mids.
    Sancho not on the bench?

The only logic I could offer to Trippier on the left is that he's our best set piece taker in that particular team.

However I'm baffled how TAA and a proper left back isn't considered a better option. If you have TAA on set pieces you're just as strong in that area.

We're starting weaker full backs on both sides. It doesn't make sense to me.

    TAA isn’t an option though.

Lots in that selection to disagree with. Southgate doesn't have a clue what our best side or shape is. Obviously we do have options in some areas and some choices are tough. But bodging Trippier in at LB when we have 2 perfectly good LBs in the squad is mental. I worry we're going to look pretty narrow down that side.

    Whats up with Sancho?

I'm just glad we don't have Dier anywhere near the squad. My first tactical instruction....clatter gobby Modric in first 5 minutes.

    They sure did. James too.
Though Trippier won la Liga as well.

Mings must talk a great game.
