True but Chris was wondering would they take the job or wait for a club role if out of work ?

I suppose they would take the risk as such roles don’t come around too often .

International management is probably a big step up for a lot of the English managers mentioned, perhaps even all, when you think of it as a personal level of intensity and pressure.

Obviously the day-to-day is less intense than club management, but the spotlight is well and truly on you to a large degree.

Midfield is our big problem. We have Rice and Phillips in there who are both the same player and both seem either unable or unwilling to turn and move forward with the ball.

This leads to passing it back to the defence over and over again. In the end someone gets bored or conscious the crowd are getting restless and hits it long down a channel.

Only when it was played into Saka last night did someone look to turn and be positive. I think Foden should come back into the side next week and play deeper.

I thought all three had a decent game. Such a big difference when you have Saka and Grealish on the ball who's first choice is to run at players rather than pass the ball backwards!

Defensively Walker was decent....going forward he was annoying. He could have played the ball down the line a couple of times for Saka but he decided to play the ball into the middle.

I think Rice will be dropped for Henderson in the round of 16, although I would quite like to see Mount in there for more forward impetus.

I think we have to accept, the style of our play is not going to change.

The only thing that will change in the knockouts, especially if we play Germany/France/Portugal is that they wont set up to take a draw with us, something all 3 opponents so far have done. This may allow us to actually counter - we are kind of set up for that but we have been too slow to release the ball and the opposition have hardly committed meaning our options have been limited.

7 points from 3 games, 3 clean sheets, comfortably topping the group and people are saying Southgate should f*ck off.

    Brilliant.

To be fair, when he got the Middlesbrough job - Most of the big players we had (Hasselbaink, Viduka etc where off). Gibson was looking to save money, he did well for two seasons with a really poor squad and unfortunately it ended in relegation - i don't think anyone would have kept us up with the squad we had to be fair.

But regardless, the problem is the FA - they want a yes man, the perfect image, no bad press, wont do anything they shouldn't and makes their lives easier. We should go all out for an experienced manager who has managed internationally, in the champions league and across various leagues. A top manager would get more from this squad - but, it isnt happening now and wont happen until after the 2022 World Cup so lets just back him and lads and hope he is pulling a masterclass

Pretty sure we've already gone down that route and failed spectacularly with Capello (albeit he hadn't managed internationally before) and to a lesser extent Sven. Who exactly did you have in mind?

Maybe it's because I support a smaller club and have had to endure four straight years of Royball, but despite the football not being brilliant so far (I thought we were good in one half each against Cro and Cze) we're picking up results and keeping clean sheets. That's the main objective in tournament football and when you look at a lot of the winners over the years (particularly Greece and Portugal) it's probably the most likely way of getting to the final and winning it.

We're in the last 16 at Wembley against one of the biggest teams in the world and half the country is moaning FFS. It's easy to forget games like this don't come around often. We've been waiting 25 years for a huge match like this on home soil. I just wish the fans would get behind the team and manager and enjoy it FFS. Judge them once the tournament's over.

Kane is an ornament. Goals are irrelevant. What a superb team we are that we can afford to carry a player. Sterling will score the goals, he doesnt mind a bit of hard work. Southgate has made it clear that the striker is not in the team to score goals and that he should not be dropped.

Whilst i understand how being pragmatic has led to tournament victories as of late, i feel the issues with this England team compared to them is as follows.

    1. Despite the defence being solid so far, i see personel in there that are capable of dropping a clanger. Pickford especially

    2. Despite having the players to do so, i don't feel England can turn up the gears like a France can for example. We seem to be stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear all the time.

    3. I also think there has been a lack of creativity in the final third. We get into positions and situations to create chances but more often than not it ends up going back to the defence

    4. I feel despite limiting them to not many chances, in the group stages all three teams were still in the game. For example, the Czech's were always a Soucek header from a corner away from equalising.

That said it was a solid but unremarkable group stage and that might work in England's favour. I think the more teams attack against England, the more it suits England going forward as we are then able to hit teams on the counter instead of breaking them down.

France won the World Cup on two occasions with their main striker scoring 0 goals.

In theory I agree with this, however when you see how the French team defended against the Germans and then looked to hit them on the counter it kind of falls apart. I also think the Portuguese are too canny to come on to us and leave themselves open. Strangely I think we have the best chance against the Germans who are obviously tactically stronger than us but, to me anyway, don’t look as physically dominant as German sides have been in the past. I certainly think we can get at them, if we can get the ball.

We just are not set up to control games from midfield, arguably we don’t really have the players to do so either. But Grealish definitely made a difference in there yesterday, first half anyway.

Obviously would've been nice if Kane had hit the ground running but to be fair we've played three teams who've stuck 11 men behind the ball for the majority of the matches and purposefully crowded him out. The Czech manager even came out before the game and said he was putting two players on him.

Who do you drop him for? DCL? Rashford? Think I'd rather stick with a world class striker TBH.

I actually think he'll get more chances against France/Portugal/Germany as they're more likely to attack and allow us space on the break, which is generally when we play our best football and where Kane thrives for Spurs.
