If Kane was confident of scoring for second time then agree correct decision. If he wasn't and judging by how terrible the penalty was I don't think he was then he should have asked one of the other senior players to take the kick. Whoever was confident enough of slotting home. I guess at the end of the day he's the only one who knows exactly what he felt but I will say this any thought of goal records shouldn't even come into equation. Should be last thing on the player's mind and same for Spurs/Kane supporters it wasn't the time or moment team has to always come first.
I’m sure every player would feel nerves in that situation. He was probably focused on trying to manage them rather than pass responsibility due to them. I’m sure he felt he could score.
As @Riverside says, I'm sure he was confident enough to take a second. He's the type of professional that practices them endlessly and has taken plenty of high pressure penalties in his career. Unfortunately you miss some. I think if there'd been better alternatives then maybe Southgate can have a word but the reality is Kane was probably still the best option. No excuse for missing but had another player stepped up and missed them Kane would be getting pelters for not taking responsibility himself as captain of the team. A lot of pressure on Kane but I think it would have been a weaker decision to pass the buck on to someone else. Everyone entitled to their opinion but I've still had no-one making that argument suggest who they'd want to take it instead of Kane. Van Dijk missed one the other day and people were sharing Maguire's penalty on Twitter to mock him. Great penalty but it's not like you'd take it off Kane and ask someone like Maguire to step up in a World Cup quarter final.
I certainly don't think he should have asked someone else to take it, he's the designated penalty taker and if someone else had stepped up and missed he and Southgate would have been slaughtered anyway.
Without a doubt I'd have chosen Kane to take that pen 101 times out of 100. I'd trust him again if we'd have won a pen 2 minutes later. Anyone is capable of missing a pen, it happens, best thing is to just accept it get over it.
If he stays he is putting down a serious benchmark for any future player. If he does stay for the rest of his career, and remains fit and healthy, just how high does he go? 350? 400?
Don't think it gets broken again to be honest. So rare to either be that good or stay at a club long enough to break it. I don't think we'll sell him in the summer so he'll push close to 300. If he extends his contract it could be any number really. Incredible to witness.
I think he should stay as getting as established within another system and culture would take time and he is now just an integral part of this spurs setup (whoever the manager is).
Inevitable but he's now record goalscorer for club and country. Loves playing for his country so think he'll go along the lines of Ronaldo and play as long as he can for England. So should have at least this qualifying campaign and one more to rack up a few more goals.
Shame really he can't compete with all the awards and cups that the likes of Ronaldo, Messi, etc have won in their lifetime, I have always said he should have moved on to another club like Man United, Man City, Barca, Real, etc and he would have something to show in his great lifetime.
Probably. I think he'll move on at the end of this contract anyway and win something in his final years.
He needs to be quick at his age, the old bones become brittle as age creeps in and reflexes suffer, he always reminded me of the great Southampton player of years gone by, Matt Le Tissier, he remained loyal to the Saints and won nothing in his career except the Full Members' Cup runner-up: 1991–92.
