I really hope somebody can free him. It's madness of the highest order if that is true. They can go on about respecting customs and nobody should be sticking their noses into certain matters but this kind of thing should be cause for an invasion to free him if that's what it comes to

5,000+ migrant workers dead building stadiums
2 journalists dead during the tournament
    LGBT+ flags confiscated in stadiums
    Iran executing footballers.

But it's ok because people can talk about Messi vs Ronaldo vs Mbappe and the "brilliant" upsets.

Worth every blood soaked penny i'm sure.

As sad and inhumane as this is, what does it have to do with the World Cup?

    Beat me to it.

No-one agrees the World Cup should have been held in Qatar but an Iranian footballer being threatened with death by the Iranian authorities doesn't really have anything to do with this World Cup. Presumably he would've been campaigning for it wherever the tournament was held.

He wasn't even in their squad, he has never played for Iran.

    Oh. Even weirder then.

Hard to disagree with the other points Frannie mentioned but that's a separate conversation that's already been done to death (excuse the pun).

Iran's story is still sports washing, the world cup was corrupt and they should've been thrown out for how they were treating protesters

I remember but had to Google his name but Andreas Escobar of Colombia was assassinated for scoring an own goal in the tournament .

As already mentioned it should never have been awarded to Qatar with repercussions still going on with prominent members in the EU parliament being questioned regarding back handers .

I've seen figures from Amnesty International , The Guadian & The Qatari Government regarding alleged deaths etc... of workers , if either of the above 3 told me today was Thursday I'd need to check the calendar .

USA , Mexico & Canada next up , scratch the surface on the behaviourisms of any of these 3 countries & you'll find an abundance of past & present attrocities as you will with most countries , unfortunately .

Not really though is it, it's now proven Qatar bought it so it's corrupt.

Iran were locking up and shooting at female protesters before it started so should never have been allowed to play in it in the first place, the execution of a former footballer just brings to light why talking positively about Iran in the world cup is sports washing.

Sorry are you saying the Qatari government is as credible as Amnesty and The Guardian?

You can just say that you made a mistake and the story is entirely unrelated to the current World Cup mate.

By giving sway to the likes of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, you do in turn give a similar pass to any other brutal regime. Once you've said basic human decency is not important, you are in a short race to the bottom.

    Exactly my point

Yes of course, but it’s still another life to a list of lives lost to sportswash a country through football.

Let's be honest mate, it's not related at all. Iran's regime would have been in place regardless of anything happening with the world cup and where it's held, they certainly aren't hanging this guy because they're emboldened by the world cup being held in Qatar. I'm perfectly happy to agree on how deplorable the two things you have brought up are, but to try and derive some relationship between the two is ridiculous at best.

Sportswashing is the same if it’s by the people hosting or the media talking up a story of their team as underdogs.

The act of accepting them to the finals offers legitimacy to the regime.

Do you think England's participation adds legitimacy to Sunak?
