Is there anything possible for a driver of my inexperience to get insured on such a powerful motor? I've not passed as yet (test booked for 8th June), and currently we can't afford to purchase a car for myself, so my parents are looking into letting me share their car for now. It's a beautiful silver model, but it's a car I'm a tad scared to drive, if only for the sheer power alone! Anyway, they've already rang up a couple of companies querying whether or not I'll be eligible and both times they've been laughed off. Do I stand any chance of being insured on it?
Cars are only as fast as the driver's right foot, but a particularly quick car will naturally be a problem in itself to an inexperienced driver. Situations can arise very quickly on the road, and powerful cars can be a handful.
Why would you want such a powerful car at first? If you're sh*t scared to drive one, then why? You'll get battered with high insurance too. Get a small engine car to start off with, then work your way up the ladder when you have more experience on the roads.
Someone told me diesel cars are lower to insure because they aren't as powerful as petrol? I've always drove a diesel so I don't if that's right...
Well first and foremost, I'd like a car to get myself around. However this isn't exactly the car of my choice, but it is the only choice I have for now, hence why I'm asking. It's not exactly the best vehicle to start off my driving, but I guess I need to start somewhere.
Just have a look at some quotes on one of the compare websites. You'll be quoted extortionate prices though.
When I first passed my test I bought a 1.7 diesel Vauxhall Corsavan 2001 for £800. It had around 100,000 miles on the clock but it was in mint condition and never had any problems with it. It was a nippy little thing and I used to get 65mpg with it. I went under my dads name on his insurance and it cost £700 a year. The year after it went down to £620. You reckon you could afford something like that?
Possibly Sacko, I'll have to have a word with the parents. However if they're to buy me my own car, they'd rather me have my own insurance with no claims bonuses and the like, as opposed to 'leaching' off theirs.
I'm sure you can get claims bonuses for yourself even on your parents insurance, depending on the company...
Who's their insurance company ? you can just get put down as a named driver surely. When I passed my test at 17 I was put on my mams insurance on her Ford Focus as a named driver. The price didn't go up that much.
how old are you and whats the specific make? i can do a model check at work for you if you want, see what type terms are applied for it? (i need to know the exact cc, yer of make, doors and whether petrol/diesel and transmission type) (i work for Norwich Union...soon to be Aviva)
i will have to do it at work tomorrow, i cant get onto the rating look up from the intranet at home, which is annoying!
