This is such a tragic way to part with money. Thank god insurance is cheap as chips in India. I would suffer a hemorrhage if I had to shell out 50-60% of the cars value as insurance.

Will do some comparisons once I get the price through, and also need to find out how many years no claims I have as I have forgotten.

    Cheers folks. Keep you informed...

Your NCD entitlement will be on your renewal from Tesco. You need to keep that even if you're going with a different company because they will require it as proof of NCD. Note that any quotes you get will only be valid for 30 days, so there's no point getting quotes until 4 weeks before your renewal date.

Get quotes in writing or email too, you can sometimes play companies off each other, can save a few bob.

Quote came through today. Gone up £90.

Got a month to find a cheaper quote, though I'm not too confident..,

Is it true that if you do your pass-plus it knocks quite a hefty chunk off your quote?

Not really. You'll find you'll basically save the price of the pass plus in the first place. I guess over a few years it'll be a saver.

I have 2 mates that used the same instructor (different one to me), and he took a backhander from both of them and give them both the P+ certificate for a score each without them even actually doing it. Lucky ****ers.

They say it can take up to 25% off depending on your situation. Dunno if that's accurate or not though in reality.

Just had a look on Confused.com and found a price which is £177 cheaper than the quote I got with Tesco.

On the information section about the insurance it says "Total Excess £550"...I have no idea about Excess so an explanation on this would be appreciated?

I also have an option of buying "Legal Cover" for an extra £30, is this worth getting?

    Sacko, was that with Aviva?

Anyway, I paid £1,700 for my first years insurance last year on a 1.2 punto sport. (W reg).

I got my renewal letter through last week, they now want £2,111. After a years experiance, no claims and turning 21!!! On a 1.2 Punto!!!!! WTF?

I'm in a dilema now, as it seems because the car is classed as "sport" and has a couple of mods (alloys, exhaust, air filter) the price is increased quite a lot.

The cheapest price so far i've found is 1,300 from Aviva which is still find bloody expensive for a little 1.2! (£550 excess)

Do i keep it and cough up? Do I sell and look for something cheaper to insure? Do I sell and keep the money in the back pocket?

i only use my car for driving to work every day (15min walk) and the odd football or shopping in Nottingham trip. Hmm......:confused

If you have an accident which is your fault you have to pay the Excess, so you'd have to pay the first £550 of any claim, and if your car got damaged and the repairs cost less than £550 you'd have to pay for the repairs yourself. £550 is way too much, my Excess is £150, but either way you don't want it above £300 or there's little point having insurance. As for the Legal Cover, if you're in the RAC or AA you probably don't need it, but it doesn't just cover any prosecutions you may get it also means a firm of solicitors will represent you in the event you are involved in an accident with another vehicle and there's a dispute about whose fault it was.

    Swiftcover...

Bingo. Get rid of the sport tat and see what price it comes out as then...

Driving is a luxury. My argument for needing my car is that I have a 30mile round trip to work everyday and I use it a lot for work. Wish I didn't use it as much, but I have to...

Well, i dont know whether the sport tag and mods actually put the price up too much, but get a feeling it does.

I'm very tempted to sell it, if im honest. I'd be so much more better off per month. For the past year i've been paying £150 insurance, £40 petrol (a month) then comes the yearly tax and MOT.

Nothing will stop me from getting a car again if circumstances mean I have too. Just seems to me that as it stands I'm just paying out decent money for something i don't really need THAT much (does make life so much easier at times though!!!)

They normally boost it chronically. Especially mods, they scream 'boy racer', which insurances companies milk.

Indeed. They make you look like a tool, your car sound like a jalopy, and you pay over the odds for the accessories and then to insure your car after adding them.

    Benefit? None.

Fair play chaps, thanks for the advice.

I didn't put the mods on myself they came with it, so just kept it as it is. Can defiantly see where you're coming from though but i personally only thought mods put it up massively if they enhanced the performance. Which although it may (don't know a great deal about cars) it certainly isn't a lot.

Anyway, I think I'm going to sell it tbh. Great rid and either keep the money and save until i really need one (a car isn't essential at the moment) or have a look for something much cheaper to insure.

What you also have to remember is mods make your car more desirable to thieves.

Just a point on the excess. This is payable on any claim you make whether its your fault or not. If it isn't your fault then your insurer may waive your excess. Some don't though (the one I work for as an example).

Legal Cover in the main is for your uninsured losses (excess, loss of earnings, credit hire). Whilst its handy, there are plenty of companies who'll take you on for free if you have a non-fault accident so its not really required.

Mine has gone up from £275 a year fully covered to £434 :( phoned them asking why its gone up so much and they said because of all the false claims other people are making and we have to cover for it somehow.

yes by ripping me off who's never had a claim in 18 years of driving , good one

Try other companies Gatti. Or do a search on their own site (using a different reg no, but same make and model) and see what it comes up. If its a lot cheaper call them back and start asking questions.
