surely the ref and his officials should have been the observant ones and booked toney. same for scuffing pen spots. its unsportsmanlike conduct and the definition of a yellow
You can see it now . They will start booking players for moving the ball/foam and getting VAR to check as well . Then everyone will be up in arms about fussy refs and VAR getting too involved .
I certainly don't think goals should be chalked off over it so if they do end up doing that then yeah another VAR nail in the coffin.
Thats something that VAR should be picking up on and letting the ref know that the player is acting the bollox
Well contrasting options there ! Can see what you mean G as if everyone did it could get a bit silly but also you’d soon get complaints if VAR starting to get involved and disallowing more goals .
I'm not saying chalk off a goal, but the folks in the Var room have multiple angles to look at and should have seen that Toney nonsense straight away. If the match officials catch it great, if they're missing it a simple in the ear prompt to the ref to check should be easy. Like, the player has placed the ball. That is fine, the ref does his spray and the defensive team is setting up based on that. To move the ball twice and not get called up on it is silly.
Yes a match official should have spotted it but the Forest players should have been more alert. Unsporting conduct. Would end up with every player getting booked when they pretend they have taken a bullet in the back when touched. All footballers could be an extra in a war film with the theatrics of going down. Let's be honest, if one of our players had done that then we would be on our feet clapping a brilliant moment. Yes he was sneaky but also clever. The days of players being absolutely honest have long gone, that ship sailed decades ago.
Exactly. It reminds me of the boxing adage - defend yourself at all times, the Forest players should have been paying attention. Players expected to be honest during a game is a joke, they claim for pretty much every throw in and corner and have done for donkeys years.
David Squires on … Ivan Toney’s return and the power of narrative in football Always good reads these
"THE BUZZ ABOUT TONEY'S RETURN WAS PERHAPS SLIGHTLY UNDERMINED BY HIS CANDID COMMENTS ABOUT WANTING TO MOVE TO A BIGGER CLUB, IF THERE IS SUCH A THING. SOME SAW THIS AS DISRESPECTFUL TO A CLUB THAT STUCK BY A PLAYER THEY VALUE AT £100m AND WHOSE GOALS COULD HELP THEM STAY IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE." I laughed, a perfect summing up. And the references to the hypocrisy of football and its links to the betting industry was bang on too. Always makes me laugh does Squires.
It's definitely a concerning situation, and it's important for athletes to adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by their respective sports organizations. While it's unfortunate to see a player facing such sanctions, it's also a reminder of the importance of integrity in sports. Hopefully, this serves as a learning experience for Toney and others in the football community. and important that when punished it is a deterrent and less of the "we'll knock a few months off, and the ban will be a few months outside of the season" which makes a mockery of some bans generally speaking football penalises very little with any kind of severity, the main instances of severity for me are very harsh and applied to lower league clubs when docking points from a relegated side and deciding to dock them the season after because they would have gone down anyway
Toney talking about leaving Brentford again. I just don't get why any club he would fancy joining would go for him? The betting ban and all this constant public disloyalty is just a red flag.
I've always maintained I understand why Brentford fans aren't bothered. Other clubs would obviously pay attention to stuff like that. Especially clubs competing for European places. It's a mark against his name as it shows poor character.
We’re very much a club that values character, won’t sign anyone with poor character and those that do quickly get shown the door. Toney’s a total professional in training, preparation and games, that’s all you need. I’d be surprised if any of this really factors into club’s decision making at all. Clubs of course look out for character concerns but this is all really overblown in my opinion.
He's only been back from a betting ban for 8 weeks and I count 3 times he's publicly talked about leaving Brentford. It's pretty weird at this point. Surely just play your football and wait for the window to open and for bids to come in.
I’ve seen talk of the reason Arsenal have cooled their interest is specifically because of his character. Or maybe ‘personality’ rather than ‘character’.
Unless the price drops significantly, Arsenal would be silly to go after him. People spoke about Arsenal needing that goal scoring centre forward like Toney to go and challenge for the title. But since January Arsenal have been free-scoring, and Toney returned to Brentford and they've won 2 games in 10.
