?

Was the 1975 Scottish League format change from 18, 20 too 10, 14,14 a good or bad idea?

The last thing that Scottish football needs is a bigger top flight. There are simply not enough good teams or teams with potential to make it any bigger.

perhaps if we went for a set up of two divisions of 16 teams ='s a total of 32 teams compared to the 42 on the spfl we currently have in 12,10,10, 10 we could have a larger top flight league and the talent less spread out across 32 not 42 teams just a thought.

how you get rid of 10 teams out of the spfl is anybody's guess as turkey's don't vote for Christmas.

    Remembering the "Scottish Super League"

Disagree on the bigger top flight point. I would go for two professional leagues of 16 or a 14 and 16 and that it's.

There are far too many professional teams in Scotland and it should be cut down.

Two decent size divisions with play offs will work.

a top flight of 18 and bottom league of 16 = 34 teams.
    More than enough for Scotland.

the relegation play-off system [which should see bottom club in spfl automatically relegated but currently does not] at the bottom of the spfl is a good idea clubs either ship up or out [based on merit/results on the pitch].
example East Stirlingshire out Edinburgh City in!

16 or 18 in top flight
when 16 /18 in top flight in the decades between 1948-1975 Scottish team(s) were either qualifying for the world cup or reaching the final of UEFA competition(s).
Two such things we currently are not doing in Scottish football.

10 teams + 2 relegated in top flight in Scottish League Football = "A poisonous climate of fear"!

Lets permanently undo the mistake of 1975 and permanently go back to a 18 TEAM top flight with each team playing each other once at home at once away for 34 games per club per season.

It was not the format that was the problem in 1975.
It was the teams in the league, the likes of inverness Clachnacuddin should have replaced the likes of Forfar Atheltic in the league.

It's absolutely worth the democratic process but ultimately that will result in it's demise. Too many clubs aren't interested and too many want a mere temporary solution, those desperate for lasting change won't get a majority per league.

Also the PFA mean f*ck all, despite Fraser's best endeavours..

    PFA SCOTLAND survey Results

    • 75% of players want Reconstruction
    • 61% want three divisions of 14 with some form of split.
    • 76% want the changes to be permanent.

PS I prefer watch Trams on the internet to watching Scottish football at a football ground.

"Just give us a top tier of 18 teams (34 games per club) and if Rangers and Celtic are not part of it for whatever reason they can just play each other/[up to] 36 times a season in a league of 2"!

"The rest of the teams can play in the a second tier of 24 clubs (46 games per club) with two up two down between top tier and second tier!

whilst a number of us in Scottish football is messing around with league reconstruction the welsh rugby union are lending their retractable roof stadium to the nhs potentially saving up to 2,000 people's lives as a result. spot the difference.
    Just a thought.

Increasing the number of teams in the top flight is only going to further reduce the quality. Not a good idea at all. Bigger, lower divisions and smaller, higher divisions is the best model.

Reconstruction talks have failed. The self-serving nature of Scottish football has won the day again. No wonder we're a f*cking embarrassment

Wee Anne Budge didn't help herself.

In any case it's the right decision in my book as it would be done to save one club and is not the best thing for the game.

This doesn't just affect Hearts and the Premiership bubble, what about Partick? Stranraer? And then Brechin magically get saved even though Kelty and Brora would wipe the floor with them and pretty much anyone else in League 2 outside of Cove. Odd how their Chairman holds a high profile SPFL post isn't it...

It's not odd at all that the Brechin chairman is on the SPFL board.

Considering it was the clubs who rejected reconstruction and not the SPFL board. In fact it was 6 Premiership clubs so i fail to see what someone on the board had to do with that?

In fairness, I was thinking back to the initial decisions to null and void the season, a decision which would greatly benefit his club in a season where they deserved nothing more than relegation. But yes not relevant to this particular discussion

But again, the attitude to this whole debacle across Scottish football has stunk. Clubs in the lower reaches of the game who are actually being run in the right way get screwed, while those who desperately need to to shape the rules to survive are able to do so. Nothing will ever change

What would you want it changed to and why? Putting more teams in an already over populated senior set up would only dilute the money that other clubs get and would add nothing to the game. The top flight is already weak and we don't need more poorer sides in that either. We need less teams in the professional leagues not more.

I never expected the top flight to be expanded, the financials would never allow for that to happen. Despite that, I was in favour of a 14-14-16 with true promotion and relegation to the rest of the pyramid and not the survivalist playoff nonsense. Yes it adds 2 more teams, you could even cut it back to 14-14-14 after this year with additional relegation. But it was the fairest way to those teams who had earned the right to move up, as well as protecting teams against relegation when they still had time to right their ship.
