It was okay I thought definitely watchable just for the cast alone. The Sam Jackson & Don Cheadle scenes were great and Olivia Colman was a delight. Probably lower tier marvel show though for me.
I lost interest in the whole Marvel Universe stuff with End Game. I’ve seen a couple of movies since and they have all been meh.
I'll be honest. the Disney mini series have all been tripe. let's never mention she hulk again but I have to say this nick fury secret invasion one could have been so.much better done. they had the skeleton of a story and absolutely hammed it up. little bits and pieces popped but it was just poor
The pandemic and the way that's caused Disney to handle the launch of Disney Plus has really screwed the MCU (and much of Disney's content to be honest). They lost the huge momentum built up by the Infinity saga and the pandemic obviously messed about with the writing, filming and release schedule of their content which has led to a right old mess. I think the fundamental problem is there's now too much content which has led to both a drop in quality and an oversaturation of MCU content. There's too many different story threads left hanging, too many 'must watch' streaming series that you need to see to make sense of the main cinema releases and it's making the whole thing a bit of a chore. Some of it is Disney's fault, some of it is the effects of the pandemic forcing things to be rushed to catch up. But they've definitely got to slow the whole thing down. Another thing that I don't think is helping them, and isn't pandemic affected in any way, is the decision to bring the Multiverse into the MCU. Parallel Universes and multiple realities co-existing at the same time has never really been something that has played well with mainstream audiences because it's complex and difficult to get your head around because we're creatures born into a linear world. What the MCU did so successfully in the first 3 phases was to conquer the nerdy image of comic book characters and films and create a world that appealed to comic book geeks and mainstream audiences alike. There was enough comic book references and Sci-Fi lore to keep the hardcore fans happy whilst still providing entertaining and relatable stories for the mainstream audiences who gradually bought more into the comic book lore as the went along. I think the Multiverse is becoming a bit too messy and difficult for the average person to follow, not helped by the oversaturation of content and endless streaming series making it hard work to keep on top of anything. And when things become hard work, mainstream audiences switch off.
Watch The Critical Drinker if you want to hear what I've thought of "superhero" films for about 5 years now. Thoroughly bored of them, and Disney/Marvel is the worst culprit. Hoping it all falls down like a wet house of cards and film makers finally get some imagination back.
He can be hard work and I struggle to watch a lot of his content and outright avoid his videos on certain subjects. But he's bang on when it comes to Marvel and superhero films in general.
Mate its now come to a point where its simply an overwhelming mess of ridiculousness. As mentioned above Infinity War/End Game were the last films I've seen (even though I already hadn't watched a bunch of films between them and maybe the first Guardians of the Galaxy). Genuinely every other week a new show or film is released. She Hulk. Attorney at Law? Like what the actual **** are they shitting these stories out of ChatGPT?
The MCU has also lost all of its stars who had the charisma to carry a big production: RDJ, Evans, Boseman RIP, Johansson, and seemingly Renner and Hemsworth now. They've also used most of their well k own characters, so are having to start trying lesser knowns. It worked for GoTG, because they were one lesser known franchise, brought into an already welle stablished series with popular characters. Now they are trying to build the MCU on heroes nobody has any real interest in. The actors they have been casting do not have the presence the previous run of stars did to carry the movies. Fantastic 4 and X Men are the last 2 big unused franchises they have left in Marvel. They need to knock the casting and the stories out of the park if they want the MCU to continue making big money.
Its going to be very very difficult To do x men when you've delivered hugh jackman's wolverine as thats an iconic character right? I personally think they've already done x men to death with the whole days of future past and had quite a steller cast at the time. I do think fantastic 4 has never been done well. It's been hammy or just plain weak most of the time I've seen it done. My view would be that the one thing they've failed to go do Is galactus and the silver surfer but I always found the silver surfer rather a very American centric and odd kind of comic book thing that is very hard to put over in a movie as anything but stupid. they'd need to go off earth for a while IMO. it is the marvel universe after all.
I think the superhero genre in itself is dead, unless you make radically different movies like Gunn's Suicide Squad & subsequently the Peacemaker series or the animated Spiderverse movies. We know how it all unravels, & the special effects are no longer a big attraction to movie audiences. Would be better to make a movie on a villain instead of a hero. But even there you need a villain who is interesting & has a cause which makes sense (like Thanos or Killmonger).
Question becomes do Disney even care? Given they have acquired so many companies they can afford to shit out a flop every week. They know the box office releases will do poorly but it will make up for it on the streaming services. Feige's original idea was to have a shit ton of films leading up to End Game. Now that is over they don't know what to do but to keep recycling the same idea.
Loki series 2 - initially confusing but it all unravels (see what I did there) to an extremely satisfying conclusion
