I walked my Charmander as my buddy from 17 candy up to 125. Squirtles are fairly common but hatched two during Halloween when it was double candy - so got 35 out of that. Geodudes aren't overly common here, not one I see a lot of.
I made the mistake of not going out walking during double candy. Could have gotten so much from the eggs if I had did an hour of walking each night.

How? Do you walk to work, or do you go out walking just to get candy? 12-13km is well over 2 hours of walking.
Just go for a walk.... I'm on my feet all night at work but because it's short distances and going back on myself it doesn't always clock.
Not being raped by pidgeys & weedles quite so much but still getting pretty much the same lot. Do you have to be at an elite level to come across something rare?

I didn't mind playing it all, but Inverness has a very limited range of Pokemon unless you go to the Caley ground (no chance of that) for fire types.

I've found Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charmander virtually impossible to find in Inverness. Pikachu only spawns in one spot, five miles from my flat as well. :/
You missed the opportunity to get them over Xmas and New Years. They were literally spawning everywhere. I caught about 180 candy worth of each (still didn't get a decent charmander though).
