Well I'm not seeking a new car as such, I just want a different one. Currently still have my dilapidating Peugeot 206, 51 plate.

It failed its MOT back in mid-June with numerous leaks, corrosive break cables etc. but soon got all that fixed. However I have a severe oil leak from my gearbox which is unfixable unless I get a new gearbox, which I am duly doing next Tuesday. Anyway I have that to sort out, a new passenger side wing-mirror (I hit another car...), a rear wiper (snapped off during the winter) and to take out the dint on the passenger side front wing.

Sooooooo I have about £500 in my savings right now, on top of that I'll have roughly £1,000 from the sale of the car as well as wages and birthday money (20 on September 8th, yaaay!) so I'd say I have about £2k-ish to spend on a sportier motor. Might even have another grand should my student loan come through in time.

So essay over, and if you could suggest to me a faster car than my current 1.1 (petrol also please) then I will be grateful. What should I be looking for? Come my birthday I'll have 2-years no claims and a full clean license.

It's a bit, err, bland and boring that I think. Been thinking more along the lines of Clio Sports (probably way out of my budget insurance-wise!), Corsa VXRs etc.

Both cars you mentioned are going to be very high insurance. You will need something that will not be as much on insurance, cheap to run, and will get you through.

You can't call an alfa bland then suggest a corsa :slap:

It seem like you've got your heart set on a hot hatch, i'd go for a focus personally, great car with a wide selection of engines (i wouldn't exclude diesel, plenty of torque) 2001-05 should be within budget. They have been out long enough that there is plenty of modifications available for performance and appearance.
Honestly dont waste your money on a vauxhall, unless you want people (me) to point and laugh :duke

Yeah a few people have recommended a Focus! I want to be a bit of a tosser, admittedly, and get a ragingly loud exhaust too so any half-decent modifications would be a help too. No idea what I'd be looking for otherwise  Want something reliable too, something which will get me by for a year or 2 until I have the funds for a different motor.

Perhaps that's a little naive of me, but you get the idea of what I'm looking for!

How on earth is that alfa less than 3k? There must be something wrong with it.

For that kinda money you could look into a fiesta or similar. Could easy pick up an 03 model for less than 3k. Imo Don't bother with a corsa, the engines are pants if you want it for going fast. Efficient, but slow.

It's 8 years old, not quick, road tax is £245 and it's not particularly fuel efficient. :shrug

You seem to spending a lot of money on a car that you want to get rid off. :hmmm Why don't you just stick a free flow on your car and hold on for a year so you can add another 1k to your budget ?

If you want fast but dont want to be butchered by insurance get a TDI and get it remapped, i know it works very well on the Golf and Passat (+25bhp for £150 iirc), should work on most TDi's. It won't have the growl of a petrol with a k&n and free flow, but it'll leave most corsas/fiestas in the rear view mirror.

BTW listen to the focus advice, i chose an almera over one for my first car, you don't know how much i regretted that after driving my mates (older) focus. Great handling, lively engines and a shedload of modifications make it a no brainer imo. :hmmm

Well I'm only doing it because I think I have a buyer lined up already who is more than willing to pay £1k for it in cash. Not too sure how it would fare trade-wise though.

Trade wise they won't give you as much, their aim is to give little as possible and make a profit.

£9,500 with Asda  Cheapest I found, if I was to pay in full, was £2,700 with Elephant :( Not good. Looks like my dream motor is out the window!

Rang my current insurance company - The Co-Operative - and the bloke on the phone said I was instantly declined, and they would refuse to even touch me on such a motor until I was at least 25. He reckons I couldn't get insured for a decent price on anything with RS, ST, GTi, TDi etc. but Elephant has proven I can. I'm sure I could find something with perhaps a little less 'oomph' but still has a bit speed and a cheap(ish) quotation!

EDIT: Could someone recommend me a good, stylish hot hatch car then with (relatively) cheap insurance? I have a Pass Plus too, though I know that won't count for very much discount haha. Got 2-years no claims too (nearly).

EDIT #2: So what about this? :whistle

Seriously? When you get to the box 'Has the vehicle been modified?' and tick 'Yes' they immediately add a zero on your insurance quote. Not to mention you'd look like a total knobhead . . .

The Co-Op, who like I said I'm currently with, said they wouldn't touch me if it had any sort of modifcation on, though I've been on CompareTheMarket.com and I've been quite successful in looking for quotes! Elephant.co.uk have offered a little over £1400 which is a whole £100 cheaper than my current car, and I put in the registration both with and without mods and was only an extra £100 with.

But yeah, to most I'll look like a total cock but I like cars like this! That one above only has 74,000 miles too.

"Only" 74,000? It's a 1.4 engine and 74,000 is a fair amount for a petrol engine? All that chequerplate in the footwells looks silly too . . . :eeek
