Anyone else watched this 2 episodes out on Disney+ set in 1600s fuedal Japan. I'm loving it so far the scenery is amazing and has a real early Game Of Thrones feel to it with the factions and game playing. Highly recommend.
Heard some brilliant things about it. Definitely on the list. Might wait for more to come out then binge though.
Yep and loved it! Already counting the days till the next episode I’ve a real interest in Japanese culture/history/martial arts so I was always gonna enjoy it. It’s also got one of my favourite actors in it, Takehiro Hira who plays Ishido. He was main protagonist in giri/haji, another fantastic show i wish I’d have done that!
Yeah I like Japanese culture myself I'm planning on going there soon. The show is really good the main English guy is giving Tom Hardy vibes the scene where he showed Toranaga the map of the world whilst the girl translated was some great tv. I think this is gonna be a smash hit for Disney/FX
take plenty of money dude, it is expensive but well worth it. It’s set in a really interesting time in Japanese history as well. In real history this would be right at the the end of the sengoku period, which was 150 years of warring factions and civil war. It’s all gonna kick off pretty soon. I think it’s really captured the brutality of this era. life is cheap after 150 years of infighting. And their ridiculous honour system. The end of the first episode is really shocking tbh. One misplaced comment or action can mean the end of your whole bloodline!
Watched the first three yesterday, very good. I like that it is actually in Japanese it just feels more authentic. Might let a few episodes build and binge like others have said.
I loved the original series when it first came out and funnily enough I was looking for the book recently as I’m going through a phase of rereading my favourite ones. I love to see this but haven’t got Disney+
Good show this, recommended. I've seen that knock off Tom Hardy who stars in it before somewhere, got charisma that fella.
Can someone educate me on this? When they are speaking English instead of Japanese, they are claiming its Portuguese? "When did you learn Portuguese" Is this just to help the viewer, or is there a reason as to why they aren't actually speaking Portuguese?
No one speaks English other than the English pilot. The missionaries in Japan are Portuguese so that is the only spoken foreign language . So when they are speaking English in screen, they’re actually speaking Portuguese!?!
Mike has just suggested this to me so I watched the trailer and think I will give it a go but I might wait until the whole thing is out because I like to binge watch.
Two episodes in & it's excellent. The perfect slow pace, level of detail in showing the culture & politics with the dialogues are very GOT-esque. I haven't watched the original or read the book though. But enjoying this.
Episode 4 was amazing. Spoiler The scene where they trade the the gifts of guns & swords was great and that ending Toranagas kid ****ed up but that was brutal AF awesome tv
Finished episode 5. Another solid episode. Spoiler The thing with the Gardner was ****ed up, even though we later find out that it served a bigger purpose. With the seppuku, the whole thing around honour & discipline is scary. But I suppose most old cultures were like that.
