Maybe if he'd picked his strongest 11 throughout the nations league and got a bit of confidence in the side rather than chopping and changing and not getting a win until the tournament itself then they'd have had more belief.
So Mourinho has announced he’s leaving Roma at the end of the season. Would anyone have him in to replace Southgate? I think I would.
Absolutely not. Say what you like about Southgate, I don't rate the guy and he's a boring non-entity. But under him there is a lot of good feeling amongst the players and they're playing as a proper team rather than a group of individuals like past England teams in the last couple of decades. It's just a shame he isn't a good enough of a manager to take advantage of it. But regardless, you could flush all that good feeling down the toilet within 6 months if you bring Mourinho in. It's all about him and always has been and he won't think twice about throwing players under the bus if things aren't going right. There is a reason he's never been at a club more than 3 years in the last two decades since leaving Porto for Chelsea. Plus he's shit these days.

International football is very different to club football. I think some of the issues he's faced at club level in recent years he wouldn't have to worry about at international level. Style of football would be the main issue but I don't think he'd be a terrible option tbh. It didn't work at Spurs but he's arguably been a success everywhere else he's gone.
I'm not sure about that. Even seeing the players occasionally is enough for a bloke like him to cause issues with certain players I reckon. Besides, I reckon we've seen the last of the England team being managed by a foreign manager experiment. So he wouldn't even be in the frame to begin with even if he was interested and he was suitable.
100% Mourinho as England manager. Just for the sheer hilarity of it. International football is dull as dish water outside of tournaments anyway.
Maybe but it's much easier to exclude those players at international level than it is at club level. If you don't want to deal with a Pogba then you just leave them out of the squad and select another player. He wouldn't be my first pick because of his style of football but I think his decline is overstated. He's largely done alright at Roma. I don't think he'd be a long term option for England but I think he'd potentially give England a good crack at winning a tournament with a lot of players coming in to their prime. Edit* He wasn't the right fit for Spurs but I'm still largely fond of Mourinho tbh.
Mourinho rumored to replace Ancelotti at Madrid. I think international football is perfect for Mourinho now that the game has gone and past him. One off games/tournaments is probably suited for him.
That would be a bad move for Real. Surely they should be all over Xabi Alonso. The days of Mourinho managing title challenging sides should be over.
Hadn't read this thread back in December. I don't understand those who are passionately Southgate out yet can't name an alternative. Surely that proves the point that the FA were correct to keep him in the job.
It's easier to exclude players at international level but overall I'd say the man management side of things is even more difficult, especially at tournaments where the squad and staff are in a much more enclosed environment. It's part of the reason why so many top club managers have failed with national teams, like Capello did with his iron-fist approach at the 2010 World Cup. Southgate absolutely excels at this aspect of the job, which is why the "no top six Premier League team would employ him" argument isn't relevant.
