We had hundreds of project fear bollox from the carrott crunching lefties lets make a note of the false lies they tried to pedal as the trade talks take place.

1....2.20pm update: Chlorinated chicken will NOT be allowed in UK, says enviornment secretary

The enviornment secretary has told BBC Countryfile that cholrine-washed chicken and hormone-treated beef will not be allowed into the UK under any trade deal with the US.

I don't understand the fear over muck like chlorinated chicken. Let them import it, it doesn't mean we'll buy it.

The problem I suppose is knowing who bought it and is supplying it. I.e. eating establishments, etc.

Assuming packaging and menus were labelled correctly we'd have the choice not to buy it. :shrug

You'd think so but not sure that would be the case. Not sure how many at the moment tell you about there meat products and how/where it's from/ produced etc.

That said at moment I don't really check.. :eeek

If we start importing US meat, with lower standards, it risks damaging our own industry as it would be difficult for our farmers to compete for customers whose main concern in price. Our farmers would have to lower standards to compete in the UK market, which could jeopardise exports to the EU, as they would no longer meet their higher standards.

There are also health risks caused by some of the lower US standards, and of course animal welfare concerns.

The American Food Supply: Not Fit for European Consumption - Focus for Health

The benefit would be we would get some cheaper food, and people with the money to buy higher standard Euroepan meat and food would be able to do so. However, that would mean eating healthy food would be a pirvalidge, and if we are dropping standards on food, we might do so on labelling as well.

But like anything to do with Brexit, its not Brexit itself that's the issue, but the type of Brexit our government chooses to pursue. We can tell the USA no thank you which appears to be the case if Johnny's post is correct. That would be the right decision in my opinion.

I'm not disputing the problems with US food standards, but it would have to be substantially cheaper for people here to buy it, and with record numbers using food banks maybe some people will. Odd that these meat products can be transported 4,000 miles yet still be cheaper than beef reared in Derbyshire though?

That does seem strange. Can only assume it'e absolute dog shit quality, perhaps literally if it's that cheap.

The price is probably increased because of red tape brought in by the EU increasing the cost to produce goods...

The problem with chlorinated chicken is that washing in chlorine doesn't particularly work that well, for instance it doesn't kill a lot of bacteria, it just makes the bacteria dormant such as salmonella. The percentage of food poisoning cases they have compared to us is miles higher and we shouldn't let it in just because it's cheaper. It'll just be another way to kill off the poor.

The Irish Prime Minister has told BBC News he believes the EU will have the upper hand in the upcoming trade talks with the UK.

Leo Varadkar compared the two sides to football teams, suggesting the EU would have the "stronger team" due to its larger population and market.

He also suggested that Britain misjudged the first phase of Brexit.

It comes as the Taoiseach is due to meet the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, in Dublin.

In an interview with BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg, days before Britain is due to leave the EU, Mr Varadkar also warned against any attempt by the UK to get a "piecemeal" deal with the EU.

"When I hear people talk about piecemeal, it sounds a bit like cake and eat," he said.

"That isn't something that will fly in Europe."

The Taoiseach said the EU could take the upper hand in negotiations, citing the two sides' vastly different populations.

He said: "The European Union is a union of 27 member states. The UK is only one country. And we have a population and a market of 450 million people.

"The UK, it's about 60[m]. So if these were two teams up against each other playing football, who do you think has the stronger team?"

Varadkar: EU will have upper hand in trade talks

Sounds like this is a message from Varadkar to the EU rather than the UK, reminding them not to forget the likes of ROI when the negotiations start. Good of him to point out that the EU 27 have a larger population than the UK though, for anyone who hadn't realised. :dunce:

I think he'll find The EU will shaft Ireland after Brexit is done, he's been a good boy spouting pro EU slogans but he knows his country will be much worse off financially when we've gone and The EU will certainly not give them any financial help they'll be left to get on with it, i for one will laugh at him when it happens.

But you'll end up unknowingly eating it when its bought and served in restaurants or anywhere wanting to save a few quid.

Not a chance, half the time we're eating halal meat for instance without knowing and dont forget, we're now under a government that will gladly do away with many regulations, so we'll probably end up with less labelling in the near future.

Despite what some think of the EU, their rules and regulations regarding food were only a good thing.

Not so much red tape, just the banning of cheap, unhealthy food in which animals welfare is minimal. The US food standards are all about greed, how much the suppliers can cut corners to save a few dollars, in the long run we'll end up paying more, through our health.

Much like nowadays where we pay through the nose for organic fruit and veg, which years back were just the norm before we started spraying our food with all kinds of shite, you can see the price of normal, non chemical laden meat and poultry becoming much dearer as companies play on the health conscious, so the less well off will have no choice eating this garbage.
