It's a combination of things. Firstly it's old news, with many of these events being 3 and a half years ago. The sting of anger that was around at the time has long faded. The pandemic restrictions are also long gone with no sign of them returning with society having largely gone back to normal, so the pent up frustration caused by living with those restrictions has also faded. Also there's the state of the world right now. There are major wars going on in Ukraine and Israel which are nowhere near a resolution and are causing a lot of division and instability in the world. There's a major cost of living crisis with rampant inflation meaning that pretty much everyone has been hit hard financially. There are so many serious and pressing current national and global crises that most people haven't got the time and energy to pore over what's now a historical crisis. And as you say, the main players in this fiasco have largely already met their comeuppance. Boris was booted out of office, Cummings went ages ago, Hancock went ages ago and now rents himself out to reality TV. And the Tories appear to be paying the price at the polls with a big defeat predicted for next year. So with most of the main culprits having already been punished or in the process of being punished, there isn't the same anger and baying for blood that usually comes with public inquiries where the people responsible are usually still in position clinging on. It's still a worthwhile process though. The public deserves to know the truth of what went on behind the scenes and those responsible deserve to have their actions and words exposed regardless of whether they've already paid a political price for their actions. And it serves as a useful case study of how not to do things that can be referred to in the planning for future pandemics. It will happen again at some point and it's vitally important that future governments are much better prepared and have a much more solid blueprint to refer to. The one and only defence for the government during the pandemic is that they were utterly unprepared for it, as were most governments in the world, and the panic inevitably led to chaos and poor decision making. That doesn't excuse most of what went on but allows a small degree of mitigation in some circumstances. Future governments can't allow themselves to be so unprepared and caught on the hop.
Some peeps really are idiotic to listen to liars like this. 100% of people who needed a ventilator but didn't get on one died. There I made a stat up too.
That's definitely a factor though, as @SamB_SCFC alluded to, we shouldn't forget that the pandemic was effectively the foundation of both Johnson's downfall and the continuing mess that the Conservative Party finds itself in. Until this week, I'd have said that most people made up their mind about Covid and how it was handled a long time ago and they don't particularly want to be reminded of that period. What has made the difference between the inquiry being near the top of the news agenda and not this week is the impression that things were actually far, far worse than we could ever have imagined.
Just tested positive again after the wife got it last week. Seems to be doing the rounds again in Melbourne, loads of people wearing masks again. Oh the joy..
Having had an 'episode' at the match yesterday I took a Covid test this morning, had to rack my brain as to how to do it it's been that long, but it was negative, so as far as I know I've still never had Covid.
Lots of people I know feeling lousy but testing negative. My boss tested positive today but been negative all week as she was feeling ill. She feels better today but still positive.
Felt like shit since last Wednesday, only took a test because the wife had a test after a colleague got a positive result after a works drinks do. This is my third trip on the Covid merry go round and it’s the worst I’ve been.
I've had all the available Covid jabs and I've never had Covid, so by your reasoning that means the vaccine must be working?
That means you also never had it before you were jabbed. Perhaps you're just a lucky chappy. As for Panja, he's had all the jabs, and has recently had a booster, yet is not only still getting covid but is getting worse affected. At what point do you begin to question if the vaccines are working?
