Is it going to be retired from use at Liverpool after He leaves?

I'd at least imagine it wouldn't be used without prior consent from Him.

I don't think the club will ask gerrard who should get the no8 shirt.

While Gerrard is a legend, and I don't see anyone matching his achievements in the near future, I wouldn't want to retire the number 8. I have never been a fan of retiring numbers as it feels like the player died or something... Also, many players would like to play with #8 on their back, and for such an important number, I really don't want this to happen.

That would be a bit over the top.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be ignorant Kenny, just I'm from the States, and most pro teams over here would retire his number if it was someone who meant so much to the club and played for so long and all everything else that he's done.

Wycombe Wanderers retired the number 14 after one of our players, Mark Philo, died in a car crash.

I'm not sure it would be appropriate or necessary in this instance, though.

don't sweat it mate. some teams in Europe do hang the shirt up for some players. I could be wrong but I think AC Milan have hung up the shirts for maldini and barasi.

23 wasn't retired for Carra, nor should number 8.

This. I'm glad someone else feels the same way!

The number 8 should continue with added meaning - if one is so inclined to place meaning in a number, of course. The same way the number 7 is coveted.

When our Giggsy left we had the same discussion and most were against it being retired, however Januzaj hasn't done it justice yet. Who would it be given to? Henderson?

We can't retire the number 8, Gerrard is going to need it when he's loaned back to us in a couple of years :thumb

It shouldn't be retired. They didn't retire Carraghers number and if they retired Gerrards number, it's basically kicking Carragher in the teeth.

They shouldn't retire it anyway. If he died tomorrow then I could understand but why would you retire a number for him just because he has left the club? How many other number 8's in your past have given as much or more than him and this has not been brought up.

    So lets see

Ian Rush, Liverpool legend, retires...lets retire the number 9?
Dalglish, Liverpool legend retires, lets retire the number 7?
John Barnes retires, lets retire the number 10 shirt?
Gerrard retires, lets retire the number 8 shirt....see where this is going?

As much a legend as Gerrard has been, the club has has numerous other legends in the past and we'll have others in the future :shrug

Jesus if this trend kicks in of retiring numbers along with a player well be seeing 3 digit shirt numbers. I can see it now.

In goal number 145, bob carolgees
In defence number 189, Ste Gerrard the third etc
