Shrews07 PM'd me the other day to find out how Sergio's operation went. Here you go: SERGIO: ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY Sergio Torres has told wwfc.com that his recovery;is well on course, and that he hopes to be ready to go before the new season starts. The Argentinean midfielder, who scored five times in forty-six league appearances for the Wanderers last season, recently went under the knife to rectify a recurring ankle problem. "I feel alright, today it's been a week since the operation and I have another week until I can come off the crutches," he said. "The surgeon had to take an extra piece of bone out of my ankle so that was what it was about, I knew about it after I got injured back in February but I wanted to play the rest of the season, so just had to have injections. I was in quite a lot of pain when I played in those games but I didn't want to miss anything, so we left it until the end." The fan-favourite is currently recuperating at his home in High Wycombe, though is not short of helpers as he looks to put his feet up. "My parents are still here, visiting from Argentina. They are looking after me and make sure I don't have to do anything!" he said. The ex-Basingstoke midfielder spoke to Wanderers World last week about his admiration for new boss Peter Taylor, and was keen to echo those sentiments after a meeting with the manager at the club's training ground this week. "I have met the 'gaffer' and I'm happy, he likes to play football and seems to be a good guy," said 'Serg'. "He told me he wants to see more end product from me and more goals, which is good. I am going to work hard in training and try and improve." Torres might well have to sit out the first fortnight of pre-season, but is hoping that he will be back to full fitness in time for the first game of the new campaign in early August. "I think I will miss two or three weeks of pre-season but hopefully I will keep fit throughout the season and build on last year. If everything goes well I will be back for mid July." Just like the rest of the footballing world the man from Mar-Del-Plata will be keeping a close eye on the stars of Euro 2008, when the tournament kicks off on Saturday evening. Somewhat appropriately, the man whose life story very much reflects that of an underdog will be rooting for the outsiders over the next few weeks. "I do like Italy because my Grandmother was born there, but I always support the underdogs," he said. "Last time I wanted Greece to win, so it would be good for a small team to do well this year." Who knows maybe 'Serg' will be picking up some tips from his namesake 'Fernando' this summer. League Two, watch out.
