    96. Hot Stuff

    Artist:
    Donna Summer
    Album: Bad Girls
    Released: 13/4/1979
    US chart peak: 1
    UK chart peak: 11
    FF ranking: N/A

"Hot Stuff" is a song by American singer Donna Summer from her seventh studio album Bad Girls, produced by English producer Pete Bellotte and Italian producer Giorgio Moroder and released as the lead single from Bad Girls in 1979. Up to that point, Summer had mainly been associated with disco songs but this song also showed a significant rock direction, including a guitar solo by ex-Doobie Brother and Steely Dan guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. It is the second of four songs by Summer to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

It won Summer the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in the inaugural year the award was given out.

"Hot Stuff" was certified Platinum by the RIAA and remained at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three non-consecutive weeks, and spent the longest time in the top ten in 1979: fourteen weeks. The song also topped the US Dance Club Songs chart "Hot Stuff" was the seventh biggest song of 1979 in the US

    My personal thoughts:

Trash. Singing is shite, lyrics is nonsensical, tune is ok but the rest make it unsalvageable. Would never hear again
    Also no MV :(

    I understand that.
Maybe I'm used to song lyrics being super broad (see Mr Schadenfreude) and not 'I want a lover'

    95. Billie Jean
    Artist:
    Michael Jackson
    Album: Thriller
    Released: 2/1/1983
    US chart peak: 1
    UK chart peak: 1
    FF ranking: N/A

"Billie Jean" is a song by American singer Michael Jackson, released by Epic Records on January 2, 1983, as the second single from his sixth studio album, Thriller. It was written and composed by Jackson and produced by Jackson and Quincy Jones. "Billie Jean" blends post-disco, R&B, funk, and dance-pop. The lyrics describe a woman, Billie Jean, who claims that the narrator is the father of her newborn son, which he denies. Jackson said the lyrics were based on groupies' claims about his older brothers when he toured with them as the Jackson 5.

"Billie Jean" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, topped the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart within three weeks, and became Jackson's fastest-rising number one solo single Billboard ranked it as the No. 2 song for 1983. "Billie Jean" is certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was also a number one hit in the UK, Canada, France, Switzerland and Belgium, and reached the top ten in many other countries. "Billie Jean" was one of the best-selling singles of 1983, helping Thriller become the best-selling album of all time, and became Jackson's best-selling solo single. "Billie Jean" was awarded honors including two Grammy Awards and an American Music Award.

Thanks partially to "Billie Jean", Thriller became the most purchased album of all time

    Personal thoughts:

Not really my style, but the accolades are deserved
Lyrics deep (I like it tbh) but has the problem of repeating the same lyrics on and on again. 4 times should be max (eg twice in a verse and then 2 of that verse)
Unrelated but why does Michael Jackson sound like a female?
Unrelated again but why release a single after the album it is in?

To sell said album. You have to remember that in 1983, not every song was available at your fingertips. You had to discover music. This was the case right up until the mid-00s. So artists would release singles, sometimes before albums were released, but often after, and if you liked the single you might just buy the album.

I've lost count the number of times I've bought albums off the back of hearing one single. Sometimes it works - Doves' Lost Souls album for example after hearing "The Man Who Told Everything", and sometimes it doesn't - I'm looking at you Hot Hot Heat dragging me in with your "Bandages" and serving up a load of trash!!
