Thought it might be useful to have a thread where people could ask for tips, and recommendations. I'll start... Booking a weekend city break in February and deciding between Krakow, Warsaw and Budapest. I'm leaning toward Warsaw, because I love places that heaps of Brits don't go to, i.e I visited Slovenia in the summer and absolutely loved it. For context, group of guys in their 20's, naturally we want good bars but also keen on good food and lots to do in the day.
When I say group, it is only 4. Would you still not recommend? I was under the impression it had great nightlife, or do you mean it's like Berlin where no venue will you want you showing up there
Nightlife was decent, some great clubs and they do outdoor thermal spa parties til 3am. I’d just say it’s more of a couples place. Elaborate on what you mean about Berlin.
Fair enough. Well, my friends have said a lot of the nightclubs in Berlin just won't let you in if you're a group of guys- could be total rubbish, just didn't know if you meant that.
Probably agree with @RM regarding Budapest. Not been myself, but mate of mine went with his Mrs a few month ago and said pretty much the same - great for couples.
Is Krakow getting ruined then? I went there in 2000 and then again ten years later and I noticed that English was more widely spoken the second time around but it was still fairly unspoilt then I thought Warsaw was shite. The last time I was in Slovakia it was Brit free but it’s full of Jakeys and not that safe at night.
Haven't been to Krakow. Don't agree Budapest is just a couples place, it's a great city and certainly enough bars in the Jewish district of the city. I visited solo for 3 days in 2014 and could have easily stayed longer. Warsaw's a nice city too, didn't find it very busy but plenty of places you can enjoy in the day / evening. My preferred city is Budapest but I think you'll find less Brits in Warsaw and is probably more what you're looking for based on your original post. As I said, haven't been to Krakow but only heard good things about it.
I didn’t say just for couples, I said more for couples. There were decent bars but very well spread out. Groups tend to prefer places that have strips of bars so you can just crawl from one to another which it didn’t have. The ruin bars were great but the novelty wore off after an hour and it was far too crowded. It depends what they’re after I guess. I just envisage a group of lads being in the piss for most of it and I really didn’t see it as that sort of place. But I loved it. I fired some guns out there too which was f*cking brilliant.
I didn't find Budapest that spread out to be honest, a lot of the night life is in the Jewish district which I felt was quite compact. Admittedly it's not a strip-like place but I don't think you'll have to walk too far to find another bar if you want to keep moving on.
Much appreciated all. Just as a reminder I did start this thread for anyone to ask for tips- hopefully people don't think it's just about my question Highly recommend Slovenia if someone's looking for somewhere new this summer!
Good thread. I always look on TripAdvisor, but the mixed reviews can blow your mind. Saying that, it’s always going to be mixed as we all have our idea of good and not so good I loved Budapest by the way
I avoid TripAdvisor like the plague, it’s full of people who really shouldn’t have the kind of power that they wield by having an opinion. There’s a nature walk that you can do here in Melbourne which is very scenic and the wildlife is fantastic. One woman reviewed it and gave it one star because she said it got too dark of a night.
Kiev!!! Cheap as ****, not overrun with tourists, and some interesting bars to check out. Can do the Chernoybl trip doing the day although a tad pricy at $120, but you'll save money on alcohol. No more than 50p a beer out there, and the ladies aren't too bad either. Krakow has a lot to do during the day, it's a bit depressing though, all about World War II and how they got destroyed, important to see of course. nightlife is pretty good I guess, shit loads of strip bars, fell asleep in one and was woken up by the stripper advising me to go home!! Budapest is amazing, but overrun with tourists now, in February it won't be so busy though so it's a good time to visit. There is quite a bit to do during the day, sightseeing, bath spas, shooting, drinking etc. Never been to Warsaw. Other cities to throw into the mix; Hamburg, Porto, Belgrade, Zagreb (**** all to do during the day but good party).
