The Government have given their backing to a bid for the 2030 World Cup.

Might be a move to bring some positive PR news for them at a time of real crisis..

Do we have a chance given what happened for the 2018 bid and post Brexit relations with the rest of Europe?

Be good to see but can see it going to South American as part of the century of the World Cup.

British bid to host World Cup 2030 backed by government

I think FIFA like to see massive infrastructure upgrades in the countries they award the World Cup too, and that's not going to be necessary in England as we already have more than a dozen world class stadia. England could host the competition in 12 months, never mind 12 years, but FIFA won't see that as enhancing the reach of the world's favourite game.

I hope so. Europe had now its World Cup so South America should get the next available (after this Qatar thing and US/Mexico/Canada Triple host). I would like a joint Uruguay/Argentina bid to commemorate the Centennial (and the first final between those two).

Give England the 2066 World Cup to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its only World Cup :whistle

It should happen really. It's a disgrace that a country with the history, stadia, infrastructure and fanatical support of England hasn't held a World Cup since 1966 and hasn't hosted a football tournament of any kind since 1996. While France had 2 in less than 20 years and the USA is getting a second one despite football being probably the fifth biggest sport there. Maybe lower.

However as others have said those exact things that should be our strengths, ready made stadia, infrastructure and huge public support seem to actually be weaknesses using FIFA's criteria. We're politically unpopular too which always goes against us as we're seen as arrogant, entitled and imperialistic. Opinions that are likely to be worsened by Brexit over the coming decade. And there's a strong emotional and historical case for having a South American country hosting the centenary event especially if Uruguay are a part of any bid.

I think we'd be up against it especially with the last part about the emotional pull of South America. 2034 might be a better tournament to aim for. It'll be Europe's turn by then and there won't be the historical element against us.

Hope we stay well away from it. FIFA will want to avoid the level of scrutiny they’d get over here anyway, and the hoops we’d have to jump through would be embarrassing. Stuff ‘em.

Get the brown envelopes out and hand them to the parasites. Sorted.

They changed the voting system. It's now voted for by member associations, not the FIFA committee.

I agree that it's almost certain to go to South America, but 2034 could be worth a shot. Why not include Scotland, Wales and England in a joint bid?

    I know.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland would do. Leave the bitter sweaties out of it so they can continue their droning on as they sit at home doing nothing all summer. They’d only get confused otherwise.

I’d really like to see this, to be fair. I’d far prefer a tournament the entire island can get behind and support.

Of course, but to an acceptable level. It’s not like we have a great love for the sheep shaggers and bible bashers either. They’re just far more tolerable than the obsessed Irn Bru drenched sectarian drunkards north of the border.

Wow, "sheep shagger, bible bashers, Irn bru drenched sectarian drunkards". :( I see you're really a "United Kingdom" . Anyway, have a nice day

btw: If the whole UK wants to get the tournament that'll mean all 4 have a guaranteed spot? Bit bold, eh?;)

It'd make a lot more sense to bid for 2034, as Argentina/Uruguay do represent really strong competition for 2030.

Having four hosts wouldn't be a massive issue though, as it'd be a 48 team World Cup by then anyway.

2030 is the 100 year anniversary of the first World Cup. Uruguay hosted the first World Cup. Uruguay are bidding along with Paraguay and Argentina for the 2030

    Historic backstory✅
    A country who hasn’t hosted a World Cup ✅
    Not England ✅

Don’t get your hopes up anyone, there is no chance we’ll get 2030. Not a chance.

The thing holding England back is the roads and transport issues, stadiums no issue, about 30 stadiums could host games.
