There have been 52 hat-tricks in the tournament's history

The most goals scored in a single game is 5 by Oleg Salenko of Russia in 1994.

Ernst Wilimowski was the only player to have scored 4 goals in 1 game and still lose

Australia hold the record for scoring the most goals in a World Cup qualifying game when they defeated American Samoa 31-0 in 2001. The now infamous Archie Thomson scored thirteen of them, unsurprisingly also a record..

Fastest ever penalty in a World Cup was in the World Cup Final 1974 Germany vs Netherlands in the 2nd minute.
Germany didn't even touch the ball yet, only Johan Cruyff (by Uli Hoeneß).

It was also the first penalty scored in a World Cup Final (by Johan Neeskens)

French striker Just Fontaine has more World Cup goals than Pele. He played in 1 tournament (1958) and scored 13 goals in 6 games

In 2018, Alphonse Areola became the first (and so far only) player to pick up a World Cup winners medal before making a single performance for his country.

Austria vs Switzerland in 1954 produced 12 goals, the most of any WC game ever

Hungary vs Germany 8-3 in the group stage came close

(this was a funny group. Hungary won also 9-0 against South Korea, Turkey won 7-0 against South Korea. We won 4-1 against Turkey but had to play another match against them for the #2 group decider (both had 1game won and 1 lost, goal difference wasn't the tiebraker (otherwise we wouldn't be in the WC final) We won the decider match with 7-2)

1954 World Cup must also be the one with the most goals scored on average.

btw: another funny fact about the 1954 World Cup. Although there were 4 teams in a group, each team only played 2 group matches instead of 3

    Germany was intentionally losing though.
Props to Herberger for being smart

This world cup is the 1st one to have a host city with 4 stadiums
Edip: Oops I'm wrong. I'll give another one then.
4 players have a chance of making Qatar their 5th WC.

By losing 2-0 to Ecuador today, Qatar have become the first host nation in World Cup history to lose their opening game.

South Africa have been the only hosts not to make it out of the group in 2010, but Qatar could follow as the second with two difficult games left to play.

India qualified for the 1950 World Cup but later withdrew because FIFA wouldn't allow them to play barefoot.

And when they did get their first win, they went on to finish in 4th place.

Indian sources says that it's because FIFA promised to pay all of India's expenses but then turned back on that deal.

Does that include all the bribes paid to win it in the first place?

Only 5 countries have scored 100 plus goals in the history of the competition.

Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy and France are in that exclusive club.

Spain are on 99 and England on 91.
