I think some of the criticism Southgate has had is justified but bonkers how low the standard from England pre-Southgate was. Wins like last night have been so routine that it's easy to forget how dismal England have been for most of our lives.

 

Worth noting that under Robson, Venables, Hoddle, Sven and Capello we beat all the teams we were expected to and ended up losing to those of similar or superior quality.

The Germany Euros knock-out game aside, that has been the case for Southgate too. Taylor, Keegan, McLaren and Woy all underachieved by Woy aside were all fairly short-lived.
