I can honestly see nations talking about breaking away from FIFA.

To be honest it’s probably past the point of reform.

Club World Cup is a non goer because the schedules of each continent don't line up. Brazil's league campaign tends to run from May to December

Mind you, they have just managed to suspend all of Europe’s (and hod knows who else’s) seasons without too much trouble….

You could probably just about justify it because it's the World Cup, everybody 'suffers'.

Having to pause the season so 2 or 3 of the clubs in the league can go play another competition? Nah, it's not happening.

We’ll see I suppose, depends how much pushback they get from the clubs involved. Certainly the big Spanish and Italian clubs will want it, the Oil clubs, probably the US investment vehicles too. Having got away with this farce there’s a sense they think they can do anything. Wave enough cash at people and they will come.

@rly old bastard I see your location is Brazil. Archrival Argentina winning its 3rd World Cup must be a pain in the arse for Brazilian football fans, right? Or don't they care much about it?

For Germans it's a pain in the arse when Italy wins a World Cup or the Netherlands (but thankfully they don't win WC finals :D)

Surprisingly, there's just as many people celebrating Argentina as there is butthurt. Messi has a lot of fans here as anywhere else, and there seems to be a "south american pride" thing going on. The Brazil-Argentina rivalry isn't as strong as it once was. But that could change any time of course.

Doubt the Brazilians are that keen on France either after what transpired in '98.

I'm still firmly in the conspiracy theory camp on that one

You're way off in suggesting there are "no natural resources."

The value of the fishing is significant. They make over £20 million/year from their fishing licenses - which funds most of their "public spending."

Oil is likely to dwarf that if they can remove the political uncertainty. When we were there in 2014, the first exploration rigs were in Port Stanley. They've now identified over 60 billion barrels of potentially recoverable oil - provided prices stay above $50 per barrel.

I’m not fluent or anything but nice to see a couple of our lads at least made the Team Of The Tournament.
