My sister was in Washington this morning.

I was **** scared when I got home at 4:30 and saw this all on the news.
I was trying to phone the Foreign Office Emergency helpline all afternoon :(

Thankfully but she phoned at 7:30 so shes alright. :)
But she was in New York just on Saturday.
If this thing has been planned for years, why did they pick a date as random as September 11th? If they'd picked September 8th my sister might well have been caught up in it all...:(

Im absolutely gobsmacked. Of course I think it could wel be Bin Laden, but also Saddam Hussein has been mentioned and I would certainly not be surprised.

What is interesting from looking throgh this thread though is the amount of panic created that produced so many rumours! If you believe what you read in this thread, the Sears Towers in Chicago were hit, San Fransisco was hit and London is about to be hit by several planes!

If Bush and the lads didn't act in such a selfish, insular, arrogant manner it may never have happened.

What should be said is a lot of the numbers have been exaggerated.

There are 10,000 workers in each WTC tower and another 5,000 visitors PER DAY (obviously only a few would be there at 8:30-9:00 though)

so ppl saying 100,000 workers in the WTC are a bit wide of the mark

its still utterly incomprehensible though :(

Just read that people were flooging bits of the WTC on E-bay earlier!

I suppose it's quite a fitting end for it though really...

Capitalism taken to it's logical extreme, Adam Smith would be proud.

25,000 work in each tower and they have around 50,000 visitors per day. It was estimated that upto 23,000 may have been in the buildings at the time the first plane hit.

Thats not quite the right figures.

25000 in the pentagon (800 personnel missing including passengers and crew from the plane)

There is 50000 on the ENTIRE world trade centre complex, there are five or six other smaller buldings. Apparently there are around 23000 in at 8:30 on the complex, so possibly around 15000 in the two towers, not including early day trippers to new york. Also, some may have been below the crash level which on both were two thirds of the way up. you also have to account for the rescue team which was caught, in the first collapse, the second collapse and the collapse of the 47 storey saloman building to the right of the complex. I am guessing the casulty list (for the trade centre alone without planes) to be about 13000.

Then there is the two planes that crashed in to the WTC towers, and the one in pittsburg. These totalled around 300 - 400, passengers, crew, and the ******* terrorists.

The list could be as high as 14000 fatalities and even more injured. It does not matter, even if one life was lost it is still a massive tradgedy to the world economy, finance, and tragic loss of life.

I think that Osama Bin Laden was the perpatrator and should be tortured (no seriously)and then killed, he has been the casue of far too much evil in this world and should be duly punished.

I heard about this on my way home from my Holiday in France, when tuning in to 5-Live at about 6pm French Time.

Unbelievable, to think people would do this sort of thing, and certainly fills us with dread of what else these people could be capable of.

My deepest sympathy obviously goes out to anyone effected directly with family or friends lost for such a meaningless and cowardly act.

Even though i agree that whoever was behind it deserves to be punished wont there be a great chance that any retaliation could lead to a massive tradgedy to the world economy, finance, and tragic loss of life ? America need to be dead certain of the culprits before any retaliation to avoid a real massive feud.

The economy's already screwed anyway... the day before the attacks, our markets were down because of unemployment reports (it's nice to know I'm not the only loser out there). The last time both the NYSE and the NASDAQ were closed on successive trading days was at the end of World War II. Last night, they were reporting that all the international markets that had already opened were down 4-7% too. The insurance premiums that will have to be paid will be astounding, probably some bankruptcy issues for smaller companies.

I still can't believe all of this is happening :(
I'm in a state of total shock.

It's like some terrible nightmare. You see New York being smashed up in films like Godzilla & Independance Day but never imagine it could happen in real life, not in a million years.

OK, yep there is a lot of confusion about the figures!

I am sure I saw an official on TV give those figures of 10,000 workers in each block - but I got 2 papers today who both said 25,000 workers in each block. Whichever it is is very frightening - is there a more heavily populated building in the world? (or, rather, WAS there...?)

Me2001 - there IS one FF member from New York - a newbie on the Scots Football board called NY Dark Blue (a dundee fan).

    I really really hope he's alright :o

NYDB IF YOUR THERE PLEASE LET US KNOW YOU'RE OK!
