After changing their manager in the group stages Ivory Coast make it through to the final , hope the FA are taking note if Gareth has a wobble
Leaving aside the red card issue, which is surely what did for the South African defender anyway, the IFAB protocol (which I admit I have just Googled) isn't particularly clear on situations of this kind. Given the challenge wasn't deemed a foul on field, I guess the officials would try to argue that a "clear and obvious error" should be corrected regardless of whether that means a free kick or penalty is awarded.
Think they can check for a penalty as the ref had given a free kick whereas if nothing was given they cannot give a free kick... Like Harry Kane in the World cup v France. Another rule that is probably more complicated that it needs to be. Then they have a new system where if it's outside the area the player can been sent off but inside and its only a booking...
I'll never know how Ivory Coast got out of their group after their abysmal loss to Equatorial Guinea, but credit to them for finally waking up in the knockout stages. I'm always for Nigeria, who've looked decent for most of the tournament, quite efficient although unspectacular. This is not the talent packed Nigeria of the 90s to early 2000s, but I trust in them. It would be some triumph if the Super Eagles could do the same to Cote d'Ivoire in the final, as they already did in the group, to lift their 4th AFCON title.
Disappointing that tonight's 3rd & 4th placed play off isn't on terrestrial tv as these games are usually far better & open than the final itself where both teams try not to lose rather than to go all out & win , understandable really .
Another goal for Troost Ekong . Nice to see an ex Watford player (and fan ) doing well ! Wasn’t the best but he cared and was kind of one of us . Are Ivory Coast going to win after sacking their manager in the group stages!?
What was it Clive Tyldesley said in Barcelona all those years ago? Name on the trophy? It's felt like the Ivorian name has been on this one for a while.
Well done Ivory Coast , worthy winners on the night . Great story for the coach appointed half way through the tournament & Haller scoring winner after 12 months ago battling testicular cancer . Not sure why Nigeria are called the Super Eagles , played like Lame Ducks tonight .
Congratulations to former Reading player (one of our most underwhelming signings) Emerse Fae - doubt many people will ever win a continental football championship in their fifth game in management!
Is this actually true or a myth? I'm sure if there was a DOGSO (Denial Of Goal Scoring Opportunity) inside the box that they could give a penalty and a red card.
Maybe but I think they tend to only give a red if they haven’t gone for the ball but might be different depending on who the ref !
I've long since felt a denied clear goalscoring opportunity would best be addressed by awarding a penalty, aka a clear goalscoring opportunity - regardless inside or outside the box whether you keep the offender on the field or not is up to whoever, but maybe just maybe the offender would think twice and not bother if it isn't a free kick and red card rather than even better chance at goal from the spot I get the feeling the red/yellow in the box is referee judgement call, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity is clearly defined in the laws (I believe, never read that part myself) as a red card, not sure there is anything about fouls in the box other than penalty... of course I don't read the laws very often, do in cricket and the whole notion of not walking is rather undermined by the fact the laws on dismissal say nothing about being out only if the umpire gives it.... fair enough if you don't know if you nicked it or can't tell if would have hit the stumps, but is akin to cheating if you stand your ground when you know you are out (trying to force an umpiring error or somehow get away with it)
