I am not talking about any cars, exactly. What ever pops your cork, but pre-1973 cars that are always in demand, like Beetles. No tax, cheaper insurance, peanuts to service and rock solid residuals.

No air bags, No ABS, No power steering and when the young inexperienced driver smashes it up, he/she increases the chance of killing himself/herself because these cars are no were near as structurally safe as today's cars. Nice suggestion.

Big deal. Cars did have safety belts when I was a kid, but in the main they were not used, my family certainly never used them. I can confirm that I have no memory of the roads being littered with the dead and dying.................this was pre air bag and pre ABS of course. I don't need to check to know that my motorbike doesn't have any of the above either.............I still use it tho'.

Go to bed, put a helmet on, stay there.

    Just renewed my insurance.

    We have 3 cars.

Managed to get me on just 'my' car + my mum and dad both on all 3 cars for just £1,200 in total.

I think that is a superb deal considering I'm 19. Most people will be paying that just for one young driver on one car!

But you're only insured on one car? And having your mum and dad on it will help.

I'm on one car, my mum and dad are on all three.

To put it in perspective, until last week I was paying £1,100 just for me, on just my car. So for £100 extra, my mum and dad are now both insured on all 3 cars.

It's a wonder none of your family ended up as a statistic then with that kind of ignorance. Obviously this has rubbed off on you.

Oh, it's far from ignorance, the opposite in fact, I find it always better to weigh up of the risks, statistical probabilities and consequences of safety features (sales tools) before blindly accepting information as "fact". You sound like the sort of bloke who'd wear a cycle helmet, because you think your should, when there is not one shred of scientific evidence to show that they are a positive thing. None of my children have ever worn one..............

I had a brand new XR2 in 1981, I drove it like loon, now if it had been fitted with crumple zones, ABS and air bags do you think that would have made my driving better or worse? Would the probability of a crash have increased?:hmmm

Classic cars certainly do make sense, classic car insurance is much much cheaper if you only need a car for running about in at weekends, if its a daily driver then it does not matter as long as you do about 5000 miles a year, and there are very many old motors out there, stuff right up into the early 90's qualifies for it.

    Renault 5
    Pug 205
    Vauxhall Nova
    VW Polo

the list is endless, you could probably even get something thats a bit bigger, old astra's, escorts, golf's etc etc, and some could even offer good safety if you dont want to be all that 'cool', Audi 80's from the late 80's were class leaders back then in safety, ABS top models even had traction control, and ofcourse there are Volvo's, so big you could never injure yourself :D

Anyway, i suppose to the youngsters these days those cars simply arn't cool compared to a little Euro box like a corsa, but surely something like an old MK2 escort has much more charecter than a modern Pug 207.

One classic that would offer alot of fun is the original Mini, i have never owned one, but surely this is a great first car, its cool, its got lots of charecter, and if its a good un it wont depreciate at all, these old cars can only appreciate now, buy a modern corsa and you will lose 500 quid straight away, buy a mini and you could make a profit when you sell it.

Is a 2001 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 SE good for first car? Does anyone have any idea how much the insurance will cost... The car is fairly cheap to buy.

Insurance will be quite high for your first car. How old are you?

As a first car with 0 no claims?? Will defo be over 2 grand FC, maybe even over 3 grand FC.

For a first car you either want to do one of two things:

    1) buy a decent, reliable car with a small engine and make sure it's Insurance group 1 or 2 and insure it FC.

    or

    2) Buy and old banger with high milage, a rubbish car but with a bigger engine, and insure it 3rd party F&T only.

Stay clear IMO, Im looking at a MK3 Golf (M Reg) 1.4 and I'm bloody looking at more than £500 and they aren't exactly quick. I'm 25 with 7 years driving, 3 years no claims. Stupidly I can insure a Nissan 350z for £450 more, 3.5ltr 250+HP rediculous!

Ah ok I'll look elsewhere then. I'm 22, I don't want a shitty car, and golf seems like the only nice looking ones around that's affordable. 1.2 or 1.4 whatever, I realise that 1.6 would be silly for a first car...

Any nice looking cars around that's good for a first car? I don't want ford ka

My first car was a 1.6. Only an Escorts though, so quite a lower bracket.
