I think when he jumps, the sun catches his eyes. It's not an excuse for him, blindfolded he should have put it over the bar but there's usually some form of reason behind something that calamitous. Circled you can see the shadow of his arm and head, which shows the sun has come across it just as he's at the height of his jump.
